Project: Visualization of Packet Loss With The Help of "Cisco Packet Tracer"

This document discusses using Cisco Packet Tracer to visualize packet loss. It begins by introducing the project and defining what packets and packet loss are. Packet loss can occur due to network congestion, hardware/software issues, overloaded devices, or security threats. Cisco Packet Tracer allows users to simulate networks and visualize packet loss in real-time or simulation mode. The document then provides hardware requirements and discusses how Packet Tracer could be further developed to test wireless coverage or network congestion related packet loss. It concludes with screenshots of Packet Tracer's interface.

PROJECT

VISUALIZATION OF PACKET LOSS WITH

THE HELP OF
“CISCO PACKET TRACER”
INTRODUCTION
Our project is based on the ‘Visualization of
Packet loss with the help of CISCO Packet Tracer’ .
“CISCO Packet Tracer” provides the easy way to
check weather the data that we are receiving from
the internet is lost or not . If the data is loss then
there are certain possibilities of that might happen
.
What Are Packets?

Network traffic is often thought of as something

that flows, like a stream or a river; however, the
information being transferred across a network
does not form a single, coherent river of data.
Rather, information is transmitted in what we refer
to as “packets.” These packets, as their name
suggests, are small, discrete units of data.
Why Packet Loss?
Network Congestion.
Problems With Network Hardware.
Software Bugs.
Overloaded Devices.
Security Threats.
What is ‘CISCO PACKET TRACER’
oCisco Packet Tracer provides multiple opportunities
for instructors to demonstrate networking concepts.
Although Packet Tracer is not a substitute for real
equipment, it allows students to practice using a
command-line interface. This “e-doing” capability is
a fundamental component of learning how to
configure routers and switches. Packet Tracer’s
simulation mode enables instructors to demonstrate
processes that were formerly hidden to students.
o Cisco Packet Tracer provides two operating modes to
visualize the behavior of a network—real-time mode and
simulation mode. In real-time mode the network behaves
as real devices do, with immediate real-time response for
all network activities. The real-time mode gives students a
viable alternative to real equipment and allows them to
gain configuration practice before working with real
equipment. In simulation mode the user can see and
control time intervals, the inner workings of data
transfer, and the propagation of data across a network .
Hardware Requirements
CPU Type Specification

processorIntel Pentium 4, 2.53GHz

OSWindows 7,8.1,10

RAM 2 GB

Display resolution 1024 X 768

Scope for future development
In the coming days as we all know that every
thing is going online, which means we need to
connect to other persons virtually now a days
we prefer to video call instead of going to a
friends home . To do such things easily , we
need the internet and to perform good and
make useful of the internet , we wouldn’t like to
buffer a ongoing video call or miss a voice while
taking to someone or taking a online class.
How to check packet loss?
How to check packet loss depends on the application
or protocol in question.

Because every application and protocol handles packet

loss differently, the effects are likely to vary.
Transmission control protocol (TCP).

User datagram protocol (UDP), on the other hand,
does not feature built-in retransmission, so it doesn’t
handle network packet loss as efficiently.
There are two packet loss tests.
For Wireless Coverage

First, make sure you’re located far from the AP, with
concrete walls between you and the AP, so you can
certify the loss is caused by signal coverage.
Find the AP IPv4 address. The command “ipconfig”
will show your network adapter’s IP configuration.
Alternatively, the wireless LAN adapter Wi-Fi section
might show you the IPv4 and IPv6 address, subnet
mask, and default gateway.
For Network Congestion

o If you want to conduct a packet loss test for loss

caused by network congestion, follow these
steps:

Locate yourself next to the wireless A

Test the internet connection against potential

congestion. I’d recommend using Google.com to do this,
because it is reliable and stable, so there shouldn’t be
any issues at the destination’s end.
