SHIP ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE
DECK DEPARTMENT
Captain / Master

Duties:
The captain is responsible for
every aspect of the voyage and vessel.

Responsibilities:
They set course and speed,
direct crew members, and ensure
that proper procedures are followed,
keeping logs and records of the
ship’s movements and cargo, and
supervising the loading and
unloading of cargo and passengers.
Chief Officer / First Mate

Duties:
He is in charge of the deck department and
also the deck crew.

Responsibilities:
He oversees all the cargo operations
including its handling and stability. He is also
responsible for training the deck crew in
safety and rescue operations besides other
emergency procedures.
Second Officer / Second Mate

Duties:
Responsible for all the navigation jobs
and holds his rank below the Chief Mate.

Responsibilities:
A second mate has the responsibility of
maintaining the charts and also plots the
routes for navigation. Although on various oil
tankers a second mate may assist the chief
officer for tank cleaning and maintenance as
well.
Third Officer / Third Mate

Duties:
The Third Officer of a merchant ship
is responsible for the safety of the ship
and the crew.

Responsibilities:
He/she undertakes the
responsibilities for maintenance of
lifeboats and fire-fighting and signal
equipment.
Boatswain / Bosun
Duties:
In charge of all the deck crew and he
supervises the crew on board. Working in
association with the chief mate.

Responsibilities:
He/she acts as a foreman of the
unlicensed deck crew.
Able Seaman
Duties:
The member of the deck department
who keep watches along with
the officers on the bridge.

Responsibilities:
While sailing, the job of an AB is to
carry out navigational duties on bridge, like
maintaining the course and standing as a
lookout during night watch.
ENGINE DEPARTMENT
Chief Engineer

Duties:
Gives orders for operation and
maintenance of ship’s machinery system.

Responsibilities:
Responsible for the entire engine room
department.
Second Engineer / First Assistant Engineer

Duties:
He needs to constantly supervise the proper
functioning of all engine room machinery systems and
also assigns jobs to the other engine officers and crew.

Responsibilities:
Second Engineer generally keeps watch on the
engine room, during the day time.
Third engineer/ Second Assistant Engineer

Duties:
He reports to the second engineer.

Responsibilities:
Is assigned jobs to look after machinery
ordered by the chief engineer, along with carrying
out daily watch keeping.
Fourth Engineer / Third Assistant Engineer

Duties:
He reports to the second engineer.

Responsibilities:
The Fourth Engineer is concerned with the
correct working of the machinery systems
assigned to him and also carry our watch keeping.
Oiler/ Motorman

Duties:
He assists the watch keeping officer.

Responsibilities:
Being a motorman would need you to remain
on your alert best to make sure that the overall
machinery always remains in working conditions.
Wiper

Duties & Responsibilities:


looks after the cleaning and
painting job in the engine room and also
does house keeping jobs.
STEWARD DEPARTMENT
Steward / Chief Cook

Duties & Responsibilities:


This is the most senior member of the
Steward’s Department and has a
supervisory role. The steward generally
instructs other personnel on daily duties
such as cooking and serving meals, cleaning
and maintenance, and overseeing inventory
and ordering supplies.
Cook

Duties & Responsibilities:


He cook oversees preparing and serving
meals. They take part in planning meals,
taking inventory and storing equipment.
