Dressing for Success
Let’s look at hygiene first
• The weather in India, with some notable exceptions, is either
hot or humid most of the year. • We all tend to perspire a lot. • A bath in the morning is absolutely essential. Maybe one in the evening also would do no harm. • A good deodorant is an investment which will pay rich dividends. Food:
•With an apple a day, you can keep the doctor away.
•With a garlic a day, you can keep everyone away, is a popular version of an old saying. •Onions and garlic are good for health no doubt. •But they do not draw people closer to you. •You must remember that Garlic is so pungent, just brushing is not enough because while it is being digested, even your skin can exude the odour. •Please avoid garlic and onions for breakfast and lunch, if you can. And brushing after every meal is a must. Hair
•Neither too long, nor too short please.
•Long hair is associated with the misfits and the short hair smacks of the military! •No matter what the style, the hair should stay in place. •If yours is a style that needs brushing often, never ever do it in public. Do it in a toilet. Or somewhere equally private. •If you need to apply oil, do it BEFORE your shower. •Regular washing of hair is necessary. Moustache and beard.
•A moustache is personal. In the south it is almost universal.
•The style of your moustache should remain simple. •Something you can manage to trim yourself. •Don’t let your moustache hair become a tea strainer. •You must shave everyday, in the morning. •For those special occasions, another shave in the evening will not be out of place. •Forget what the film stars do. An unshaven man conveys a despondent, sickly attitude in real life. •If you must have a beard, make sure it is trimmed regularly. Glasses:
•Many of us need to wear glasses. Some of us need them for
reading too. If you can afford it and your ophthalmologist recommends it, laser surgery will get rid of your glasses for ever. •Thick frames never did look good on anybody. If you need bifocals try the new variable lenses. Photo chromatic lenses (the ones that change colour) are outdated, especially if you do a lot of work indoors. Your eyes are always obscured to some extent and this doesn’t go well with today’s openness. Shirt
• A well pressed light pastel coloured plain shirt exudes power.
• Wear light coloured shirts during the day. • Pale Pink is in fashion currently. • Pin stripes look good, but checks are strictly casual, party wear. T shirts are not even being sported these days. • In hot weather, half sleeves look cool. Use cotton or blended cotton. • Synthetics or silk are only for the evenings. • Kurtas and Salwars did not really make it in the corporate world. Trousers
• Not too tight, not too baggy.
• Well pressed. • Pleated or unpleated ? Does not matter. Although a single pleat is comfortable. • Cotton blends keep your trousers in place. • Dark trousers during the day. Shoes
• Sturdy leathers with normal heels. Black or brown.
• Laced shoes if you do not have to remove them too often in the day. • Black has universal appeal, remember brown shoes go only with tan, beige or brown trousers. • The socks should be dark colored. • No whites. No reds and no multi-coloured socks. Self designs are ok. Belt
• Should match the colour of the trousers.
• Brown belts do not go well with black trousers. • Ensure that belt and shoe colours are the same. • 30 mm is the standard currently. • Broader ones are only for your jeans. Ties
• Those in the corporate world find them indispensable.
• If you have to wear a tie, learn to knot it first. • However well somebody else does it, it will not be as good. • Imagination can run riot in the choice of colours and designs. • Right now, solid single colour ties with no designs are in vogue. • Do not be too flashy in the choice of colour or design. Coats /Jackets
• People use windcheaters on bikes these days.
• Apart from the wind, the purpose of a windcheater is to protect your shirt from dust. • Remove it when you are meeting someone. • Coats and suits are part of the corporate culture, however impractical they may seem. • Go for sober colours. Plains are better than stripes. • No checks please. Checks are good for sports jackets only. • Choose your suit well. A few hundred rupees extra is a small price to pay for the impression you will create. Jewellery
• A wedding band, a gold or gold/steel strapped watch, (Leather
straps are more comfortable) a discreet chain are all part of the well dressed male. • Chain is not expected to be seen normally. The Mobile Phone
• This has become a symbol of power these days.
• Although they are highly personal, choose one that is not too complicated. Also not too flashy. • Use a ring tone which is NOT a film tune. • If you are in company and you get a call, excuse yourself, go to a private corner and take the call. • And yes, never take or make a call when you are driving. The Kerchief • Always ensure that there is one in your pocket. • Preferably plain white. Definitely clean.
Pens
• There was a brief trend to sport half a dozen pens in the
shirt pocket. Only clerks and peons do that now. • Your shirt pocket should not bulge with all those useless scraps of paper. • Ideally, your shirt pocket should have one pen, (gold plated is good if it is not tarnished, silver is ok) a small folder containing your visiting cards. And nothing else. Perfumes
• An aftershave and a deodorant are just enough for the day.
• Liquid and roll-on deodorants do not last the whole day. • Try gels (Gillette has a good range) • Use other perfumes for the party, if you wish. • Just a little more care about your dress and the way you look. • Things happen around you faster. It is now truly said, “Clothes make the man” Wish you all the best
