How many digits do you need to write ten
thousands? Do you have any idea how
large 10 000 is? We can answer these
questions if we know very well our place
value.
Place value
- In Math, every digit in a number has a place value.
Place value can be defined as the value represented
by digit in a number on the basis of it’s position in the
number.
Let us put the digits in the place value chart.

Remember!
• The place value of a digit tells the value of the digit.
• We can put only one digit in any place value position.
• The greatest five- digit number is 99 999.
• The least five- digit number is 10 000.
• The greatest digit we can use in a place value position is 9.
• The least digit we can use is 0. it is called a placeholder.

Why is it important to know how to read and write numbers?
To learn this lesson very well, let us make use of what we
have learned about place value.
Sometimes we use the non-standard way of reading and
writing numbers in word form. Let us use the place value
chart.
