AGENDA
 Product Design and Development

 Capacity Design

 Materials Management

 Material Planning and Inventory Control

 Just in Time / Budgeting / Material Planning

 Purchase Management / Store Management / Safety Management

BENEFITS OF PRODUCTION CONTROL

 Improvement in profits thru - Balanced Inventory,

stabilized Production, optimum utilization of Resources
(Inventory, Manpower and machines), reduced indirect
costs etc
 Competitive advantage thru – Reliable delivery to
customers, lower production costs and new and better
product to customer
ELEMENTS OF PRODUCTION CONTROL

 Control of
 Planning
 Materials
 Tooling
 Activities
 Material Handling
 Due Dates – delivery and production
 Information
OBJECTIVES OF PPC
 To deliver quality goods
 To ensure maximum utilization of Resources
 Quality
 Minimize product through-put / cycle time
 Optimum inventory / flexible manufacturing
 Proper and optimum coordination between work stations
 Effective reduction in costs, no bottlenecks
 Proper schedules of production
 Lower overall costs
STAGES OF PPC
 Planning

 Operations

 Control
ROLE OF PPC IN THE ORGANIZATION
 Product Design
 Job Design and Process Design
 Equipment Selection and replacement
 Labor skills and training
 Raw Material selection and sub contracting
 Plant Selection and Layout
 Implementing controls and schedules
ROLE OF PPC IN THE ORGANIZATION
 Policies
 Inventory control
 Quality
 Schedule and control
 Productivity and cost control
 Planning and implementing control systems
 Modifying policies and designs
ROLE OF PPC IN THE ORGANIZATION
DOMAIN OF CONTROL OF PPC

 Material • Loading
 Methods • Scheduling
 Machinery • Dispatching
 Equipment • Expediting
 Manpower • Inspection
 Routing • Performance evaluation
 Estimation • Cost Control
DOMAIN OF CONTROL OF PPC

 What to produce – Product Planning

 How to produce – process, material, routing
 Where to produce - Facilities
 When to produce – Schedule & delivery dates
 Who will produce – manpower Planning
 How much to produce – quantity and economic batch
size
PPC IN JOB PRODUCTION

 Job Production – manufacture of products to meet

specific customer requirements of special orders
 Quantity is small
 Example – boilers, turbo generators, steam engines etc
 Three categories
 Small number of products produced
 only once
 intermittently when need arises
 periodically at known intervals of time
PPC IN JOB PRODUCTION

In such cases PPC is relatively difficult and limited

 Every job order is of different nature, different

sequence of operations
 No standardized routing

 Specific job orders assigned to different work stations

based on available capacity

 Production Schedule depends more of priority than on

planning, capacity and utilization

 Some PPC can be implemented if orders are repeated
PPC IN BATCH PRODUCTION

 Job Production – manufacture of number of identical

articles either to meet specific order or for continuous
demand
 Quantity is medium to large
 Three categories
 Medium to large number of products produced
 only once
 intermittently when need arises
 periodically at known intervals of time
PPC IN BATCH PRODUCTION

In such cases PPC becomes effective as quantities

increase
 Case of External order – Delivery timing and batch

size determine to what extent PPC gets implemented

 Case if it is for internal consumption – More effective

PPC – scheduling, Routing, estimation, planning,

Loading, inventory control can all be planned and
controlled
 Issues in both – Batch size, setup costs, inventory

carrying costs
PPC IN CONTINUOUS PRODUCTION

 Mass Production – Large number of identical articles

produced – However mechanization, tooling and
equipment not for specific component
 Flow production – Plant, equipment, layout designed

to produce one particular product only. Large initial

investment and change to production line requires
major change
PPC is more effective and for longer term. Benefits of
experience are more dominant.
PPC IN CONTINUOUS PRODUCTION

Requirements of effective PPC

 Sound organization – effective delegation & Authority

 Info feedback loop needs to be effective

 Standardization of tools and machinery

 Trained personnel

 Appropriate Management policies regarding

production, inventory, stocks etc

 Accurate assessment of Cycle and Lead times

 Adequate and expandable plant capacity
