3RD Grade Simple Machines

Levers, wheels, pulleys, and wedges are examples of simple machines that make work easier. Levers help lift objects using less force. Wheels allow objects to move more easily over surfaces by reducing friction. Pulleys change the direction of a pulling force. Wedges can be used to split wood or hold doors tightly in place.

SIMPLE

MACHINES
LEVERS
• You use a lever when you use the claw of a hammer to pull a nail out of a
board;

• Levers can help you lift things.

WHEEL
• It is a simple machine that makes work easier;
• Wheels turn, and they help us move things;
• A wheel turns around on na axle, which is like a stick stuck through the
middle of a wheel. Sometimes one axle joins two wheels together.
The force of friction

• Imagine that you are riding a bike. You are pedaling hard
and the wheels are turning fast . You see a stop sign ahead, so
you pull on the brakes. The brakes press against the wheels
and stop them from turning. That’s how you stop your bike.
When the brakes press against the wheels, they cause friction.

TRY IT: rub the palms of your hands together, back and forth.
Keep rubbing, and your hands start feeling hot. This heat is
produced by the friction caused when the surfaces of your
hands rub against each other.
Now, put a few drops of water in your hands, then rub them
together again. Do you feel how the water in your hands cut
down the friction between them?
• Have you ever started riding a bike
and heard a squeaking sound? It
can happen when there is too much
friction. It can keep wheels from
turning smoothly and keep the
machines from working well.

• You can solve this problem putting

a few drops of oil beetween the
chain and the gears. The oil
lubrificates the surfaces and cuts
down the friction beetween them.
PULLEY
• A pulley means what it says: it pulls.

• Open the curtains on a window, then

you’ve used a pulley. When you pull
the cord down, the blind goes up.
That’s because a pulley changes the
direction of a pull.
WEDGES
• You can use a wedge to hold something tight;
• If you slide a wedge under a door, it will hold the door tightly in place;
• A wedge can also be used to split things apart. To split a log , you can use a wedge
made of metal;
• Thousands of years ago, people made hachets out of sticks and stones. They chipped
the edge of a stone to make it sharp as they could, and they used leather and grass to
attach the stone to a stick handle.
INCLINED PLANES
• A plane is a flat surface. “Inclined” means to place
something with one part toward the ground and the
opposite parte raised;

• Imagine you are pulling a wagon up the curb, you

turned two flat boards into an inclined plane;

• People in wheelchairs use inclined planes all the time.

They are called ramps. Ramps make it possible for
people in wheelchairs to get in and out of buildings,
and to roll smoothly on or off a sidewalk.
