Alignment Test of The Machine Tool

This document describes an experiment to perform alignment tests on a lathe machine. The tests include checking the straightness of the saddle, alignment of the center, parallelism of the spindle to the saddle, and true running of the spindle. Dial gauge readings will be recorded at different positions and orientations to calculate deviations and errors, which will be plotted against the specifications. The results will help evaluate the manufacturing accuracy and identify ways to reduce errors.

Alignment Test of the

Machine Tool
ME 374 Machine Tool Laboratory
Aim
■ The aim of this experiment will be to perform various alignment tests on Lathe machine
Objective

■ The objective of this experiment will be to record the dial gauge readings
at different positions of mandrel and find the error at those positions for
different orientations
■ Plot the points and check whether the error observed with different tests
is within permissible range specified
■ Comment on the visualizations and ways to reduce these errors
Principle

■ The alignment test is carried out to check the grade of manufacturing

accuracy of the machine tool. It consists of checking the relationship
between various machine elements (such as bed, table, spindle etc.,)
when the machine tool is idle and unloaded.
■ The quality and accuracy of the finished work depends on the accuracy of
the machine tools used in their production. The machine tools must be
able to produce jobs of given accuracy within prescribed limits
consistently.
Lathe Machine: An Overview
Different Alignment tests in Lathe

■ Straightness of the saddle in horizontal plane

■ Alignment of the Centre in Vertical Plane:
■ True Running of the spindle
■ Parallelism of the Main Spindle to Saddle Movement
Straightness of the saddle in horizontal plane

Permissible error: 0.02mm over the length of mandrel

Alignment of the Centre in Vertical
Plane

Permissible error: 0.02mm over 600 mm length of mandrel

True Running of the spindle

Permissible error: 0.01 mm at position A and 0.02 mm at position B.

Parallelism of the Main Spindle to
Saddle Movement

Permissible error: (a) 0.02/300 mm mandrel rising towards free end only. (b) 0.02/300 mm mandrel
inclined at free end towards tool pressure only
