The document discusses sampling distributions of means. It defines a sampling distribution of means as the distribution obtained from random samples of a specific size from a population. The document notes that the mean of sample means will equal the population mean, while the standard deviation of sample means will be smaller than the population's standard deviation. It then provides an example calculating the population mean, variance, and standard deviation, as well as the mean, variance, and standard deviation of the sampling distribution of means for samples drawn both with and without replacement from a population.

Objectives:
 Understand the difference between with and without
replacement in solving for mean, variance, and standard
deviation.
 Specifically know the properties of sampling distribution
of the sample mean.
 Understand the concept of sampling distribution of mean.

Topic: Sampling Distributions of Mean

Definition
A sampling distribution of sample
means is a distribution obtained by
using the means computed from
random samples of a specific size
taken from a population.
Properties of the Distribution of Sample
Means

The mean of the sample means will be

the same as the population mean.
The standard deviation of the sample
means will be smaller than the
standard deviation of the population.
A population consists of three numbers ( 2,4,6). Consider all
possible samples of size 2 which can be drawn without
replacement from the population.
Find the following:
a. Population mean
b. Population variance
c. Population standard deviation
d. Mean of each sample and the mean of the sampling
distribution of means
e. Variance of sampling distribution of means
f. Standard deviation of sampling distribution of means
Without Replacement
