Power Losses and Efficiency: DC Generator

The document discusses power losses and efficiency in DC generators. It provides an example problem of calculating the current supplied by one generator of two parallel connected generators sharing a load. It also gives two sample problems: 1) calculating the efficiency of a 100 kW, 250 V generator with a 5 A field current and rated load, and 2) calculating the efficiency of a generator with a 0.05 ohm armature and 0.01 ohm brush resistances, delivering 40 A at 100 V terminal voltage.

 Requirements for Effective Parallel Operations

 1.Effective Values of Voltage should be the same.
 2.Frequency should be the same.
 3. The voltage should be exactly opposite in phase.
 4. Phase Sequence must be the same.
 5.The operation of properly connecting generator in parallel
 With the system is known as synchronizing.
 Sample Problem
 Two similar generator 400 V, 3 phase ,60 hz share equal power
delivered to a balance , 3 phase 50KW, 0.8 lagging power factor. If
the power factor of one generator is 0.95 lagging.Find the current
supplied by the other generator.
 SOLUTION
 IL = I1 + I2 (KCL)
 FOR COMPLEX OPERATIONS
 I2 = IL – I1

 IL =PL/SQUARE ROOT 3 VL PFL
 = 50,000/ SQUARE ROOT OF 3 (400) 0.8
 IL = 90.211 A
 Angle load = arc cos 0.8 =36.87 degrees

 I1 = P1 /SQUARE ROOT 3 VT PF1
 = 25,000/ SQUARE ROOT 3 (400) 0.95
 I1 =37.984 A
 Angle on P1 = arc cos 0.95 =18.19 degrees
