Word stress refers to accenting or stressing one syllable in a multi-syllable word more than the other syllables. Stressed syllables are higher in pitch, longer in duration, and louder. English words follow patterns of stressing the first syllable of nouns, adjectives, and adverbs more often than other syllables. Verbs with prefixes are usually stressed on the second syllable. Prefixes are often stressed in nouns but less so in verbs, while suffixes are rarely stressed except for some noun, adjective and verb suffixes. What is word stress?

Word stress is the idea that in a word with


more than one syllable, one (or more than
one) syllable will be stressed or accented.
And the rest will be unstressed, or,
unaccented.
Stressed or accented syllables will be higher
in pitch, longer in duration, and generally a
little louder than unstressed or unaccented
syllables.
Word stress

English words have certain patterns of stress which you should observe
strictly if you want to be understood. The best way to learn English stress
is to listen to audio materials and to repeat them after the speaker.
Generally, common English nouns, adjectives, and adverbs are more often
stressed on the first syllable than on any other syllable.Verbs with prefixes
are usually stressed on the second syllable, i.e., on the first syllable of the
root after the prefix.

English words can't have two unstressed syllables at the beginning of the word; one of
these syllables will be stressed. Prefixes are often stressed in nouns and less often in verbs.
Suffixes at the end of the word are rarely stressed, except for a few noun, adjective, and
verb suffixes that are usually stressed.

The syllables that are not stressed are weak or small or quiet.There are two very
important rules about word stress:

-One word, one stress. (One word cannot have two stresses. So if you hear two
stresses, you have heard two words, not one word.)

-The stress is always on a vowel.
