Online Video Tutorials: Sai Vidya Institute of Technology

This document contains notes from a class on open channel flow hydraulics. It introduces different types of channel flows, including steady and unsteady, uniform and non-uniform, rapid varied and gradually varied, laminar and turbulent, and sub-critical and supercritical. The class covered the introduction, classification of flows, and defined key terms like channel, hydraulic grade line, and open channel flow. Recommended reference books for further reading on hydraulics and fluid mechanics are also listed.

Applied Hydraulics - 18CV43 2

Introduction
• Channel – passage through which water flows
under atmospheric pressure
• Flow of liquid with FS
• Flows takes place under the force of gravity
due to the bed slope of the channel
• HGL coincides with FS
• Flow in pipe is said to be open channel flow
when level of water is below the top of pipe
Classification of flow through channels:

• Steady & unsteady flow

• Uniform & non-uniform flow
• Rapid varied flow
• Gradually varied flow
• Laminar, transitional & turbulent
• Sub-critical, critical & super0critical
