Properties of Addition

The document discusses the three main properties of addition: 1) The identity property of addition states that adding 0 to any number yields the original number. 2) The commutative property of addition means the order of the addends does not change the sum. 3) The associative property of addition allows adding numbers in any grouping order.

Properties of

Addition
Learning Outcomes
• Add 0 to any numbers
• Add two numbers in any order
• Add three numbers by grouping
them in any order
There are three main properties
of addition

• Identity Property of Addition

• Commutative of Addition
• Associative Property of
Addition
Let’s Review
Draw a line between the
matching equation
Identity Property of Addition

- The identity property of addition

says that the sum of 0 and any
number is always equal to the
number itself.
Here’s an example:

8
8 + 0 = ____

10
0 + 10 = ____
Look at the example:

3 + 0 = 3
Commutative Property of
Addition
- The commutative property of
addition says that changing the
order of addends does not change
the sum.
Here’s an example:

7 + 5 = 12
Here’s an example:

5 + 7= 12
Another example:

5 + 3 = 8
Here’s an example:

3 + 5 = 8
What Properties of
Addition shown in
this problem
4 + 0 = 4
Identity Property of
Addition
(6 + 2) + 1 = 6 + (2 + 1)

Associative Property of
Addition
8 + 1 = 1 + 8
Commutative Property
of Addition
Remember
• Identity property of addition, also
called Zero property of addition
• Commutative property of addition,
also called Order property of
addition
• Associative property of addition, also
called Grouping property of addition
