The 7-Step Moral Reasoning Model The Difference Between Reason and Will

Moral reasoning involves critically analyzing situations to determine the right or wrong course of action. The document presents a 7-step model for moral reasoning developed by Scott Rae. The model involves gathering facts, identifying ethical issues, determining relevant virtues and principles, listing alternatives, comparing alternatives to principles, weighing consequences, and making a decision. The model is intended to be unbiased by cultural or religious factors, though it draws on biblical principles. The document distinguishes between reasoning through logical thinking and exercising will through decision making.

evaluation. It is oriented
towards virtues and principles
with consideration of

principles.

3. Determine what virtues / principles have a bearing on the case

5. Compare the alternatives with the principles
6. Weigh the consequences
7. Make a decision

Will -  is the faculty of the mind that selects

“It’s the smallest decisions that can
