Teaching reading

 From scratch – to kids:

 Phonixes – interactivity – collocations “image-letter”


(“Image-word”)

 Listening to all sounds, words and texts

 Absence of translation

 IPA is not needed (do not transcribe the sounds)


Interactivity
 Provide videos before reading (Family and Friends,
Incredible English), flash stories, interactive books
(web-site starfall), interactive alphabet

 Work with words more (web-site wordwall) – word


spelling, rewrite words, match pictures and words
Phonixes
 Letter collocations which are mostly used in words (teach
not by a single sound system but by sounds combinations)

 A – sound Э, А, А:, ЭЙ – show the combinations:

 Cat, fat, sat, hat (change one letter in the beginning –


study combination “at”

 Sad, bad, mad – combination “ad”


Image - letter \ Image - word
 When you learn alphabet pay attention to sounds
rather than letters. If you practice letter “O” – a
good image is not “OWL” (O is pronounced A) but
“OVAL” – the clear “EU”

 Add new sounds gradually (stick to pacing)


Listening
 Listen and repeat the same sounds and words
several times in different contexts:

 Use puppets to help you repeating when introducing


sounds and words

 A sound (phonix) should then be matched to the


word and picture:
 A – hat – the picture of a hat
Translation and IPA
 We do not have to translate when we know all the
words and have the images (a comix) as a
background

 IPA is not used when the system of phonixes is


applied. They’ll mix sounds and letters and IPA
letters a lot.
Reading with teenagers
 What is efficient:

 Pre-reading tasks:
 Introducing the text vocabulary
 Prepare for the topic of the text (discussion)
 Include grammar constructions being learnt in the text

 Teach them to understand a general thought and find details


(reading for gist \ detail)

 Practice reading aloud isn’t always needed


After reading
 Discuss the author’s view \ agree \ disagree \ express
their opinion \ practice linking ideas and sentences

 Broaden their horizon, give projects to prepare. (If


they’ve read an article on a new historic research,
motivate them to find out about any more interesting
ones on the net and prepare a report)

 Make sure they not just read but understand why they
are reading that (motivating relevant texts)
Use authentic materials
 You may:

 Find articles (and adapt them if necessary) on the net

 Use the transcripts of the video (TED talks) as


reading tasks, then watch them

 Give them home reading in order to retell it orally


then and learn many new words
Home work
 Choose 1 from the 2 options:

 1) prepare the tasks for younger learners using some


phonixes to teach letter “O”, include the weblinks on
interactive sources

 2) prepare the tasks for teenagers (pre-intermediate) for


reading a text on the topic: “Healthy eating”: find a text
(attach it to your task), prepare pre\post reading tasks.
