Martin Heidegger was a German philosopher born in 1889 who taught at the University of Freiburg. He is considered one of the most influential 20th century philosophers. In his works such as "The Question Concerning Technology," he addressed issues of modernity and developed an original philosophy of history. He defined technology in two ways - as an instrument to achieve ends, and as a fundamentally human activity of using means to achieve ends. Technology can thus be viewed as a tool for individuals and groups, as well as a defining aspect of human production and invention.

WHO IS MARTIN HEIDEGGER?

 was born in Messkirch, Germany, on September 26, 1889.

 Messkirch was then a quiet, conservative, religious rural town, and as such was
a formative influence on Heidegger and his philosophical thought.
 In 1909 he spent two weeks in the Jesuit order before leaving (probably on
health grounds) to study theology at the University of Freiburg
 In 1911 he switched subjects, to philosophy.
 He began teaching at Freiburg in 1915.
 In 1917 he married Elfride Petri, with whom he had two sons (Jörg and
Hermann) and from whom he never parted.
 one of the most original and important philosophers
of the 20th century, while remaining one of the most
controversial.

 In his insightful essays and lectures, such as “The

Question Concerning Technology” (1953), “The Way to
Language” (1959), “Time and Being” (1962), etc., he
addressed different issues concerning modernity,
labored on his original philosophy of history—the
history of being.
 Heidegger's later work includes criticism of the view,
common in the Western tradition, that all of nature is a
"standing reserve" on call, as if it were a part of
industrial inventory.
 Heidegger was a member and supporter of the Nazi
Party. There is controversy as to the relationship between
his philosophy and his Nazism.
THE ESSENCE OF
TECHNOLOGY
1. Instrumental Definition: Technology is a means
to an end.
 In this context, technology is viewed as a tool
available to individuals, groups and communities that
desire to make an impact on society.
 How technology is used varies from individual to
individual, groups to groups, and communities to
communities according to their individual and
collective fuctions, goals, and aspirations.
• While technology is omnipresent, knowing its
functions requires paying attention to how human
use it as a means to an end. In this sense, technology
is an instrument aimed at getting things done.
2. Anthropological Definition:
Technology is a human activity

 Alternatively, technology can also be define as a

human activity because to achieve an end and to
produce and use a means to an end is, by itself, a
human activity.
 The production or invention of technological
equipment, tools and machine, the products and
inventions, and the purpose and functions they serve
are what define technology.
