Chapter 5 - Media Literacy

Media literacy encompasses the practices that allow people to access, critically evaluate, and create or manipulate media. It is not restricted to one medium. Media literacy is the ability to identify different types of media and the messages they are sending. The five core concepts of media literacy are that all messages are constructed, messages are constructed using a creative language, people experience the same media message differently, media have embedded values and points of view, and most media messages are organized to gain profit and/or power. Social media literacy involves a specific set of technical, cognitive and emotional competencies required for using social media to search for information, communicate, create content, and solve problems in both professional and social contexts.

Media literacy encompasses the practices

and create or manipulate media. Media literacy
is not restricted to one medium.
Media Literacy
Media literacy, put simply, is the ability to identify
different types of media and the messages they are
sending. When we speak of media, it encompasses
print media, such as newspapers, magazines and
posters, and theatrical presentations, tweets, radio
broadcasts, etc.
