SOURCES OF MISUNDERSTANDING IN

INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION
BY : CLARISSA M. ARDALES
BS-CRIM 1
WHAT IS INTERCULTURAL
COMMUNICATION?
INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION

refers to the communication between people from two different cultures.

• A symbolic, interpretive, transactional, contextual, process

• Process in which people from different cultures create shared meanings.
• The effects on communication behavior when different cultures interact
together.
WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON
REASONS FOR
MISUNDERSTANDING?
1.ONE’S OWN SENSE OF REALITY
- we always interpret the world
through our own lenses or sense of
reality. It is affected by the social
environment, family, religion, education
and many other aspects of our lives. The
effects is partly conscious and largely
unconscious.
2. PERSON’S LIMITED
KNOWLEDGE
OR VOCABULARY
- sometimes there is a situation where
another person’s knowledge or vocabulary
is simply not enough to imagine or
understand what the other person was
trying to tell him or her.
3. UNCLEAR MESSAGE OR PITCH
- message, talk, elevator pitch, or
what say on the phone or in the zoom is
unclear to the one listening in this way
unfortunately often the ones
communicating forget to clarify the idea
and message.
4. INTERFERING FACTORS SUCH
AS
BACKGROUND NOISE
- each of us can certainly identify a
situation in a disco, bus, during the rush
hour, or on the street that we have heard
differently what the another person has
said.
5. THE MATTER IS SIMPLY HEARD
WRONG
- we easily misunderstand when our
brain automatically combines things and
words with each other. This happens often
especially at home when we spend time
with our loved ones.
.
6 DIVERSITY OF A LANGUAGE THE
SAME WORDS ARE
UNDERSTOOD DIFFERENTLY
- words thus have several meanings
depending on the context . The same word can
have a different meaning between the dialect.
This may lead to comical discussion between
people if the meanings and the context of
spoken words are not clarified.
7. THE LISTENER INTERPRETS THE
MATTER DIFFERENTLY
- people often interpret the matter from her
own sense of reality or worldview and we do this
unconsciously. We may have a discussion about
self-leadership, well-being at work, religions,
immigration we all interpret the debate based our
own worldview.
8. SENDING OR PRESENTING YOUR
MESSAGE TO THE WRONG
PERSON
- this is probably the most human
misunderstanding of all we simply send the
message to the wrong person by mistake or
forget to make sure the person is the right
stakeholder to promote what we pursue.
MISUNDERSTANDING IN INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION

may result from many different and possibly interacting sources

such as inadequate perception, inappropriate comprehension at
different linguistics levels, gaps, in interlocutor’s knowledge of the
world, uncooperativeness on the part of one or both of the
interlocutors, or their inability to assemble and realize an
intercultural move that is expected by the partner at this particular
point in the interaction.
 Today in our professional lives, we
come across people from different
cultural backgrounds. With the rapid
expansion in businesses, many
individuals are facing a tough time in
communicating across several cultures.
Therefore, it is important to learn how
to communicate effectively with cross-
cultural audiences.

Tips for effective cross-
cultural communication
 Speak simple English

Always, remember to use simple

English. Speak shorter
sentences and use familiar
words. Avoid speaking puns,
slang, jargons and making
specific cultural references.
 Speak slowly

It is important that you speak clearly and

slowly, especially when communicating with
people who are not native English speakers.
When you speak slowly, you give abundant
time to the listener to interpret your words.
However, don’t raise your voice while you
enunciate.
 Encourage feedback

In order to understand that your message is received as

intended, make sure to encourage a feedback. You may
ask questions here and there and encourage the listener
to share his views. Just a nod or a smile may not
indicate that your message is received well. Therefore,
always have a two-way communication and don’t wait
till the end to ask a feedback. A question and answer
session after every little discussion will do more good in
effective communication.
Be a good listener

Avoid interrupting the other person in

between if you have a doubt. It may
come across as a rude gesture.
Instead, be a good listener first and
let the speaker finish his sentence or
idea before interrupting.
