Physical Education Project: Topic: Major Movements in Joints

This document discusses the major movements in joints. It begins by defining joints and classifying them as non-movable, slightly movable, or freely movable synovial joints. The main types of movable joints are then described, including hinge, pivot, ball-and-socket, saddle, and gliding joints. Next, the document explains the movements allowed by synovial joints: gliding, angular movements like flexion and extension, and rotation. It concludes by acknowledging the teacher and principal for the opportunity to research and present this project.

2
Joints

Link between 2 or
more bones or cartilages

Supported and made stable

by ligaments

Movement along joint is

produced by muscles

3
Classification of joints

Non-movable joints Slightly movable joints

Freely movable
joints – (synovial
joints)

4
Movements of joints
Immovable or Fibrous Slightly movable joints
joints
• Some degree of movements
• They are fixed joints. between bones.
They never move
• Example:
• Example :Joints of skull
– Backbone joints
– Pelvic joints

Freely movable joints / Synovial joints

Allow large range of movements

5
Types of movable joints
• Hinge point : These joints allow a forward and backward
movement. Example : Knee joints , elbow joints.
• Pivot joint : These joints give a rotation movement. Such as
the movement of neck.
• Ball and socket joint : In these joints , one bone has a ball –
like shape and the other has a socket – like shape .They are
fit together to make a free movable joint .Example : Shoulder
joint and hip joint.
• Saddle joint : It is a joint where one of the bones forming
the joint is shaped like a saddle with the other bone resting on
it like a rider on a horse. Example : wrist joint
• Gliding joint : It is a joint in which articulation of contiguous
bones allows only gliding movements , as in the wrist and the
ankle.

Movements allowed by
movable/ synovial joints

7
Gliding

 Flat surfaces of two

bones glide across
each other.

8
18
Angular Movements

Flexion Extension
9
Rotation

 Turning of a bone
around its own
long axis.

Acknowledgement
I would like to express my special thanks of
gratitude to my teacher as well as our
Principal Ma’am who gave me the
opportunity to do this wonderful project on
the topic (‘Major movements in joints’).
This project also helped me in doing a lot of
research work to enhance my knowledge.
