“Why doesn’t JCU have Indigenous people teaching this subject?” (one SES response, 2019)

• Universities Australia (2019) indicate

Indigenous “academic” employment rates in
Australia between 2005 and 2017 are:
✗ very low
✗ not representative of the
wider Indigenous
population
✗ barely increasing

• The 2016 Australian census indicates 3.3% of

Australia’s population identified as Indigenous
whereas only 0.8% of academics in Australia’s tertiary
sector identified as Indigenous (Asmar & Page
2018).

• Indigenous school teacher rates are similar –

1718 out of 253,242 in 2001 (Reid & Santoro,
2006)
My positionality

• “roots” and “routes” (Clifford 2000)

The pathways that we take shape our identities, both personal and professional … along with the
originary places that we belong to.

Indigenous voices …

The people we will meet on the page and “listen” to e.g. Aileen Moreton Robinson, Martin Nakata, Tyson
Yunkaporta, Ernie Grant among many others
