What is Social Media?
Social media is a collective term for websites and
applications that focus on communication, community-
based input, interaction, content-sharing and
collaboration.
People use social media to stay in touch and
interact with friends, family and various
communities. Businesses use social applications to
market and promote their products and track customer
concerns.
Social media has enormous traction globally. Mobile
applications make these platforms easily accessible.
Some popular examples of general social media
platforms include Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.
What is Communication?
Communication is simply the act of transferring
information from one place, person or group to another.
Every communication involves (at least) one sender, a
message and a recipient. This may sound simple, but
communication is actually a very complex subject.
The transmission of the message from sender to recipient
can be affected by a huge range of things. These include
our emotions, the cultural situation, the medium used to
communicate, and even our location. The complexity is
why good communication skills are considered so
desirable by employers around the world: accurate,
effective and unambiguous communication is actually
extremely hard.
What is the Purpose of
Social Media in Communication?

Social media allows individuals to keep in touch with

friends and extended family. Some people will use
various social media applications to network and find
career opportunities, connect with people across the
globe with like-minded interests, and share their own
thoughts, feelings, and insights online.

meaningful dialogue, foster collaboration, exchange
ideas and boost student interaction.

and improve their communication skills.

express their opinions using social media.

4. Homework Help
learners have doubts about an assignment or project
they can simply post a message requesting if anyone
can help. They are also able to write exact queries to
the teacher that other students also can see. This
enables the entire class to have access to the
response from the instructor.
Advantages of social media

5.Preparing students for future
When students will enter the workplace,
it will very important to use a social
network and find employment. Through
LinkedIn, students can start a
professional web presence, research a
company and link with other job seekers
and employers.
Disadvantages of social media
in Communication
1.Lacks Emotional Connection

Too much screen time and not enough face-to-

face communication gives us fewer chances to
practice empathy or emotional connection in
general. As a result, people get worse at
“reading” each other’s emotional expressions.
When we can’t read each other to begin with,
we erode our ability to connect, and our
overall health and well-being.
Disadvantages of social media
in Communication
2. Gives People a License to be
Hurtful

Notice how people tend to have the

guts to say all sorts of nasty things
online? It’s because they think they
have a right to say harmful things
they wouldn’t say to your face
Disadvantages of social media
in Communication
3. Decreases Face-to-Face Communication
Skills

Computer reliance could hurt a person’s

ability to have a face-to-face conversation
by making it awkward and unusual to hear
something and respond with a thoughtful
message through the spoken word because of
one’s dependence on a keyboard to convey a
message.
Disadvantages of social media
in Communication
4. Conveys Inauthentic Expression of
Feelings
Similar to lacking emotional connections,
it increases inauthentic emotions, thus
causing it to be difficult to read what
the other person was actually
intentionally trying to mean in their
message
Disadvantages of social media
in Communication
5. Diminishes Understanding and Thoughtfulness
Like in point #4, you find it difficult to
understand if the person was authentic in their
message, so then you lack understanding or unable to
determine someone’s level of thoughtfulness.
People are spending so much time online that they
don’t always understand the feeling, emotion and/or
character of the person they are talking to. When
you talk to someone through a message or even a
voice, you can’t always fully understand them.
Disadvantages of social media
in Communication
6. Causes Face-to-Face Interactions to
Feel Disconnected
When you’re so used to communicating via
texting or social media messaging
platforms, and you finally see your circle
of friends or family, the face-to-face
interactions are not the same.
