Controlling Hazards and risks

All working environment hazard can be


controlled using different methods.

Identifying Health And safety Problems


Some ways of identifying health and safety problems are the following :
• Observe the workplace Environment
• Investigate workers’ complaints
• Study accident and near-miss records
• Study sickness figures
• Hold surveys among co-workers about health and safety concerns
• Create checklist to help inspect the workplace
• Study the result of inspections done by the employers or by the authorized representative
• Read reports or other information about the working environment

METHODS OF CONTROL
• Elimination - The process of removing hazards from the workplace.
Elimination is the best way to control a hazardous risk and should be used
whenever possible. For example , when purchasing devices , safety should
be the first concern. Make sure devices conform to recognized safety
standards.

•Substitution - Substitution happens when a new substance is used instead


of another substance. The purpose of substitution is to find a new chemical
that is less hazardous than the or original.

•Education and Training - Employee education and training on how to


conduct work safely helps to reduce the risk of exposure , it must not only
cover how to do the job safely , and ensure that the workers understand the
hazards of their jobs.

• Good housekeeping - is necessary to prevent the accumulation of toxic


materials or hazardous situation.
•Emergency Preparedness- make sure the necessary equipment and
supplies are readily available and that employees know what to do in
case of an accident , and employees should practice emergency
response skill regularly.

• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – PPE includes items like respiratory ,


Gloves face shield eye protection and footware that can be used to provide a
barrier between the wearer and the hazardous chemical or material. PPE should
only be last resort because it may fail without warning.
