TAE 5 - Poster presentation-DESKTOP-K71E030

The document discusses the battery management system (BMS) in electric vehicles. A BMS monitors battery parameters like temperature, voltage, and current to ensure safe and efficient operation. It collects this data to eliminate safety risks and optimize performance. Key functions of a BMS include safety monitoring, performance optimization by maintaining state of charge, health monitoring through data analysis, and communicating with other vehicle systems.

BMS is an electronic system that manages a rechargeable battery to ensure it operates

safely and efficiently. BMS is designed to monitor the parameters associated with the
battery pack and its individual cells, apply the collected data to eliminate safety risks and
optimize the battery performance.
Designing a BMS
Primary functions of BMS for an EV In order to control battery performance and safety it is necessary to understand
what needs to be controlled and why it needs controlling. This requires an in depth
1. Safety understanding of the fundamental cell chemistries, performance
BMS continuously monitors parameters such as temperature, voltage and current in and characteristics and battery failure modes particularly Lithium battery failures. The
out of the pack to ensure it is being operated in safe conditions the entire time. battery can not simply be treated as a black box.

2. Performance Optimization –
Li-ion batteries perform best when their State of Charge (SOC) is maintained between
the minimum and maximum charge limits defined in the battery profile.

3. Health Monitoring and Diagnostics

The BMS uses the collected data points (temperature, voltage, current etc.) to estimate
the State of Charge and State of Health (SOH) of the battery pack.

4. Communication
The BMS is responsible for communicating with other ECUs (Electronic Control Units) in
the vehicle. It relays the necessary data about the battery parameters to the motor
controller to ensure the smooth running of the vehicle.

Multi Level Safety System

 Intrinsically Safe cell chemistry BMS Functions:
 Cell Supplier and Production Audit  Data acquisition
 Cell level (internal) safety devices  Safety protection
 Ability to determine and predict the state of the battery
 External circuit devices
 Ability to control battery charging and discharging
 BMS Software  Cell balancing
 BMS Hardware - Fail safe back-up  Thermal management
 Containment  Delivery of battery status and authentication to a user interface
 Communication with all battery components
 Prolonged battery life
