Reported Speech
Changing Verb Tenses
Reported (Indirect) Speech can be introduced by a verb in
present tense, when we are:

A. Reporting a conversation that is still going

B. Reading a letter and reporting what it says
C. Reading intructions and reporti them
D. Reporting a statement that someone makes very often.
When the introductory verb is in present, present perfect or
future, report the direct speech without any change of tense.
Example
PAUL (phoning from the station): I’m trying to get a taxi.

ANN (to Mary, who is standing beside her): Paul says he is trying
to get a taxi.

BUT, reported speech is usually introduced by a verb in

past tense, that’s why verbs in the reported (indirect)
speech have to be changed into the corresponding past
tense.

Example
Bart said, nobody loved him…
