ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE

• Organisational structure refers to the levels of

management and division of responsibilities within
an organisation.
• This structure is often presented in the form of an
organisational chart.
DELEGATION

• Delegation means giving a subordinate the

authority to perform particular tasks.
• It is very important to remember that it is the
authority to perform a task which is being
delegated, not the final responsibility.
Advantages of delegation for the manager
• Subordinate feels trusted
• Some managers are reluctant to delegate
• Managers loses some control over subordinates
• Allows managers to give time to other issues

Advantages of delegation for the subordinate

• Makes work more interesting
• Gives authorithy to others to take decissions and
perform tasks
• Staff development increases job satisfaction

control by supervisor and

ORGANISATION CHART

• Chain of command is the structure in an

organisation which allows instructions to be passed
down from senior management to lower levels of
management.
• The span of control is the number of suborninates
working directly under a manager.
Advantages of an organisation chart
• The chart shows how everybody is linked together
in the organisation.
• Every individual can see their own position in the
organisation.
• It shows the links and relationship between
different departments within the organisation.
• Everyone is in a department and this gives them a
sense of belonging.
There is therefore an important link between
the span of control and the chain of command. The
longer the chain of command, the taller will be the
organisational structure and the narrower the
span of control.
When the chain of command is short, the
organisation will have wider spans of control.
Advantages of short chains of command
• Communication is quicker and more accurate.
• Top managers are less remote from the lower level
of the hierarchy.
• Spans of control will be wider.
FUNCTIONAL DEPARTMENT

• Line managers have direct authority over

subordinates in their department. They are able to
take decisions in their departmental area.
• Staff manager are specialist advisers who provide
support to line managers and to the Board of
Director.
DECENTRALISATION

• A decentalised management structure means that

many decisions are not taken at the centre of the
business but are delegated to a lower level of
management.
• A celtralised management structure means that
most decissions are taken at the centre, or higher
levels of management.
Advantages of a decentralised management structure
• Desicions are taken by managers.
• The manager will feel more trusted and will have
more satisfaction from their work.
• Decisions can be made much more quickly senior
managers have to be given all the information
before making a decision.
Different form of decentralisation
• Functional desentralisation.
1. Human resources
2. Marketing
3. Finance
4. Production
• Federal desentralisation.
• Regional desentralisation.
• Desentralisation by project team.
