English Book Elementary School Grade 5

1. Is there any cultural content in your chosen textbook? Is it presented
explicitly or implicitly? Is it SC/TC/IC (Cortazi & Jin, 1999, in McKay,
2002)?
From the book we choose, we found some contents related to the
culture. The culture contained in the textbook like family name,
Japanese language, French language, was hands before eat. This is not
explained directly that the culture is a culture of a particular place, but
we can see that in English language textbook are also listed things with
cultural relations.

It is international target culture (IC), since there are some

different culture from different places.
2. How is it presented in terms of text, image and task (Weninger &
Kiss, 2003)

It is presented in the form of task and using a simple sentences. The

author puts the cultural elements in the text of the reading. We think
by explaining it through task, the students will be able to make their
imagination about the story read and adjust it with their respective self,
with their respective self, with their culture and value contained in
themselves.
3. Why is it presented (McKay, 2002)? And why is it presented that
way?

• It is presented to create the material in the book more attractive and

interesting to the students and also because culture is related to very
closely to language learning. So the students will learn the language
as well as the culture.
• It is presented that way because this book is addressed to the
elementary school, so the author uses a simple sentence for easy to
understand the disciples and attracts the students’ attention to the
passion of learning because they find things that is just about culture
they have not known before.
4. Do the text, image and task allow students to explore sphere of
interculturality?

• Of the few example that have been shown before about the
sentences that have cultural elements, from this book of student are
not only given information only but they can reflect on it by their own
circumstances. For example there is mentioned about family name,
from which students can realize if they also have family name and it is
their culture. In addition the students can also be aware of the habits
they usually do and think about why they do that and they can explain
about it.
5. How would you suggest to improve the presentation of the content
so as to include some cultural Issues? (McKay, 2002)?

• According to us to present cultural content in the language learning

book is very good if the explanation of the culture is accompanied by
some images, so that makes the reader more interested to look at the
picture and they can predict first what topic they will have. It also help
the reader to easily understand the explanation of the culture.
