Human-Computer Interaction: Practical 3 - SWOT Analysis & Value Mapping

This document outlines the objectives for a practical assignment on designing a new social media platform. It instructs students to (1) finalize their group work idea and get approval from their tutor, (2) conduct a SWOT analysis of competitors, (3) develop a synopsis for a hypothetical "Black Mirror" episode about potential issues with social media to avoid in their own design, and (4) draft value propositions for their new platform to identify how it will create value for users.

Practical 3 – SWOT analysis & value mapping

Marta Cecchinato / Lynne Conniss / Effie LeMoignan

Objectives for today
• Check with your tutor that your idea is ok
• Do a competitors’ analysis
• Black Mirror writing room
• Value proposition of your new social media platform
(1) Finalise your group work idea
• Check coursework brief in your groups
• Ask practical tutor if you have questions
• Finalise you group idea to “Design, prototype and evaluate a ‘new
social media’”
• Check your idea with the practical tutor
(2) Competitors’ analysis
• Start by making a list of all major competitors for your specific idea
• Then use a SWOT analysis (or similar method) to compare

SWOT is useful because:

• It analyzes strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats
• One of the most known and applied methods
• Helps to identify key forces and their impact
(3) Black Mirror Writing Room
Think about your experience when things may have gone wrong using social media,
the news, and ethical issues such as these:

 social media privacy, algorithmic bias, online harassment, intellectual

property, misinformation, etc.

Now develop a synopsis for a Black Mirror episode (use template available on
Blackboard – see example in next slide).

The next step is to consider how we don’t get there! Make sure your design avoids as
much as possible the scenario you come up with.
(4) Value proposition
How is your new social media platform adding value?

Use ad-libs to pinpoint exactly how you are going to be creating

value. Try out a few different options.

You may need to revise this once you have gathered user
requirements.
