Statically Indeterminate Problems

This chapter discusses statically indeterminate problems. It defines statically determinate beams as those where the number of reactions equals the number of equilibrium equations, while statically indeterminate beams have more reactions than equations. To solve indeterminate problems, additional equations based on elastic deformation are needed. Two common elastic analysis methods are described: the force method, which removes one reaction to make the system determinate, and the displacement method, which determines displacements using member stiffnesses.

CHAPTER 2

Statically Indeterminate
Problems
Introduction
Statically determinate beam are those in which
reactions of the support value of all the external
load which act on a body can be determined by
the equation of static equilibrium alone (Ʃ Fx=0, Ʃ
Fy=0 and Ʃ Mz=0).
If the number of reaction exerted upon a beam
exceeds the number of equation in static equation,
the beam is said to be statically indeterminate.
In order to solve the reactions of the beam, the
static equation must be supplemented by equation
based up on the elastic deformation of the beam.
Example

 Example statically determinate

Ʃ Fx=0, Ʃ Fy=0 Ʃ Mz=0

Example statically indeterminate.

Elastic methods of analysis

 Inorder to determine the reactions of statically

indeterminate problems we have two common
methods. These methods are:

 Force method (flexibility method) and

 Displacement method (stiffness method).

Force method (flexibility method)
 When the reaction force or internal resisting force over
a cross section exceeds the number of independent
equation of equilibrium, the structure is called
statically indeterminate.
 These cases required to use additional relations that
depend on the elastic deformation deflection in the
members.
 The first step in analysis of structural systems using the
force method is the determination of the degree of
statically indeterminacy???
 which is the same as the number of redundant reaction.
The degree of indeterminacy is taken as the difference between the
number of reaction and the number of equation.
 Applyingforce method to axial loaded bars, one of the reactions
temporary removed make the system statically determinant.

from the assumption

Displacement method (stiffness method)
Another well organized procedure for analyzing statically
indeterminate problem is based on determining displacement at
selected points and providing information for finding the
reactions and internal forces.

Applying displacement method to elastic axial loaded bars,

where stifinesses Ki=Ai*Ei/Li for bar segments K1 and K2.

The main objective in this method of analysis is to determine

the displacement Δ, the principle parameter of the problem.

In the method we say first, second or third degree of

kinematics indeterminacy which depends on the nature of the
problems.
