To Density: Presented By, T.Eliazer

Density is defined as the mass per unit volume of a substance. It is a measure of how tightly packed the molecules are. Density can be calculated by taking the mass of an object and dividing it by its volume. The standard unit for density is kg/m3 in SI units and g/cm3 in cgs units. Dense objects like iron have higher densities than less dense objects like wood. When finding the density of an object, one takes its mass and divides it by its volume. Hot air is less dense than cold air because as air is heated, its molecules move faster and spread out, decreasing its density.

INTRODUCTION TO DENSITY
 Density is defined as the degree of
compactness of a substance
 Compactness means that how close the
matter is.
 Density is the measure of mass per volume
WHAT IS MATTER?
 Matter is everything around you. Matter is
anything made of atoms and molecules.
 Matter is anything that has mass and takes
up space.
 Are you matter? List some items around you
that are matter.
 Matter comes in 4 states: solids, liquids,
gases, plasmas
WHAT IS MASS?
 MASS = the amount of stuff in an object
 How much matter an object contains.
 The basic unit for mass is kilogram(kg)
 To understand quickly, think of a pillowcase
filled with feathers and with bricks
 Bricks shall have greater mass than feathers
 Because bricks are heavier and denser
WHAT IS VOLUME?
 Volume = how much a three-dimensional
space enclosed by some closed boundary
can hold.
 for example, the space that a substance
(solid, liquid, gas, or plasma) or shape
occupies or contains
DENSITY

Density is defined as mass per unit volume. It is a

measure of how tightly packed and how heavy the
molecules are in an object. Density is the amount of
matter within a certain volume.
WHICH IS HEAVIER-IRON OR
WOOD?
 Iron nail is heavier than a wooden stool
 Consider if an iron piece has a greater mass
than wood, then what to say?(Vol. is
constant)
 Then an iron has a higher density than wood
 If iron nail has much lower volume than
wooden stool, then the iron is lighter than
the wood
FORMULA OF DENSITY

M = mass V= volume D = density

M=DxV V=M/
D D=M/V
UNIT OF DENSITY
 If the mass is measured in kg and the volume in m3
, then the density is kg/m3
 This is the SI unit of density
 cgs unit of density is g/cm3 (cgs=Centimeter Gram
Second)
CAN DENSITY BE CLASSIFIED AS
RATE?
 No, it can’t. Because rate shows how a physical
quantity changes with respect to time
 Density can’t vary with time because it is not
involved with time
HOW TO FIND THE DENSITY OF AN OBJECT?
1) Find the mass of the object
2) Find the volume of the object
3) Divide : Density = Mass /Volume

Ex. If the mass of an object is 35 grams and it takes up 7 cm 3 of

space, calculate the density.

Set up your density problems like this:

Given: Mass = 35 grams
Volume = 7 cm3
To find: Density (g/ cm3)
Formula required: D = M / V
Solution: D = 35g/7 cm3
Ans :D = 5 g/cm3
How is it that hot air is less
dense than cold air?

•The more air in once space ,the denser

the air
•As air gets heated up, energised
molecules will move around increasing
the speed of air, losing density
•Since molecules are going off, the air
becomes less dense
FLOATING AND SINKING

 Objects with larger density will sink in

water. Because it has high density than
water
 Objects with lesser density will float in water
 Objects with lower densities will float in
objects with higher densities
