TOPIC 1: WHAT IS ART?

The product of man’s inventiveness and creativity


The result of a conscious will or effort to create
artworks or objects with function.
Similar with the word “craft” (Renaissance
Period)
Related to fine arts (Collingwood 1938)
An attempt to create pleasing forms: to please
with regards to his creation and should please or
give aesthetic pleasure to the viewers (Herbert
Read)
WHAT IS ART AS…?
ART APPRECIATION

Aesthetic education is the capacity to


understand works of art and experience a
certain enjoyment in creating arts.
It deals with our encounter with the artworks
and the artists and how we are affected with
it.
It puts us into the heights of good taste.
Aesthetic taste is the ability to detect and
evaluate the aesthetic properties of an object.
IMAGINATION

It is envisioning ideas that are not present in


reality
It is visualizing the impossible or things that
are not present in our senses.
Dream is a form of imaginative thinking,
things perceived in dreams are unreal and no
assurance to happen in real life.
Fantasies and fairy tales were the result of
imagination
CREATIVITY

 It uses imagination to represent new ideas and create a physical embodiment which is beneficial
and with value.
 It is unveiling of the impossible to possible.

 Can creativity be learned?  


 Creativity is a skill that can be developed and a process that can be managed.
EXPRESSION

 An expression of an individual, making known his thoughts or feelings.


 T h e w o r k o f a r t r e f l e c t s t h e a r t i s t ’s p e r s o n a l i t y, b a c k g r o u n d o r e v e n p e r s o n a l c i r c u m s t a n c e s .

 Expression is an avenue for the artist to explore more about his emotion and creating something
beautiful out of them.
