Matching Network For RF Energy Harvesting

This document discusses radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting and the need for a matching network. It describes RF energy harvesting as collecting usable power from electromagnetic radio waves. The key components of an RF energy harvesting system are an antenna, matching circuit, rectifier and battery. A matching circuit is important to efficiently transfer power from the antenna to the rectifier by obeying the maximum power transfer theorem. The document reviews various matching circuit designs proposed in other works and highlights reconfigurable matching networks that can adjust component values to achieve optimal matching at different frequencies.

What is Energy Harvesting?
Energy harvesting is the process by which energy is derived from
external sources (e.g., solar power, thermal energy, RF signals, wind
energy etc., also known as ambient energy), captured, and stored
for small, wireless autonomous devices, like those used in wearable
electronics and wireless sensor networks etc.

What is RF Energy Harvesting?

 Radio frequency energy harvesting (RFEH) is an energy

conversion technique employed for converting energy from the
electromagnetic (EM) field into the electrical domain (i.e., into
voltages and currents).

 Radio Frequency harvesting is a process of collecting usable

power from the radio waves released from a base station[2].

 The various RF energy sources are, namely, WiFi, WLAN,

Digital TV, AM, FM, GSM, Bluetooth, etc[3].

1. Receiving antenna
2. Matching circuit
3. Rectifier
4. Battery
 Power that receive by receiver antenna is alternative in nature, so it is
important to have circuit that can convert the ac power to dc power
since most of solid-state device require a source of dc power to
operate.
 To efficient transfer of received RF power by antenna to rectifier
circuit, matching network is needed.
 Basically, a rectenna is a type of antenna functioned to rectify
incoming electromagnetics (EM) waves and converting into DC

Matching circuit

Impedance mismatch occurs when RA≠Rrec,s or Xrec,s≠XA. In such

a scenario, the antenna is not able to deliver the full available power
to the rectifier.

Need of Matching Network for RF energy harvesting

 Power that receive by receiver antenna is alternative in

nature.

 To deliver the full available power from antenna to rectifier,

ie., for efficient RF to DC conversion matching circuit play
great role.

 So it is important to have circuit between receiving antenna

and rectifier, to obey maximum power transfer theorem.

Reconfigurable Matching Circuit for WEH
The maximum power transfer can also achieved through a
reconfigurable matching network, in which the values of some
elements can be adjusted to guarantee the best matching at the
required frequency.

Conclusion

 It is observed that the literature on co-design

approach to model matching circuit is widely
explored for its low cost and ease in
implementation.
 Low loss because of maximum power will transfer
from receiving antenna to rectifier circuit.
 Efficiency will increase
