Breastfeeding
 
Definition:
 Breast Care is the Process of cleaning the

breast of the mother that helps in


maintaining hygiene and prevent from cross
infection during feeding.
Purpose:
 Breast care can help you prevent and manage

problems so you and your baby can enjoy the


benefits of breastfeeding.
 To clean the breast.
 To detect any abnormalities.
 To stimulate milk ejection.
 To prevent local infection.
 To prevent breast complication.
Indication:
 Postnatal mothers.
 Before and after breastfeeding.
 Cracked nipple.
 Pt who are not able to take self-care.
 Nipple with unhygienic conditions.
Common Abnormalities
 Breast rash
 Nipple Discharge
 Lumps
 Color and Texture change
 Nipple pain
 Nipple changes
 Soreness and Tenderness
 Armpit Pain
Procedure:
 Establish a routine of checking your breasts

and nipples regularly. Leaning how to


identify, prevent, and treat conditions that
can occur during breastfeeding can help you
avoid problems and resolve discomfort faster.
Steps:
1. Prepare breast care tray
 Screen

 Mackintosh with towel

 A bowl with 2-3 cottons

 A bowl with warm and cool cotton swabs (12-15).

 Dry gauze pieces (12-15)

 Kidney tray/paper bag

 Nursing records/assessment sheets.

2. Explain the procedure to the mother about the benefits of


breast care.
3. Ask permission in giving care towards the mother (involves
assessing, capping, and touching the breast of the mother)
4. Provide screen for privacy.
5. Provide Comfortable position for the mother. Sitting
positions is preferred.
6. Spread the mackintosh with towel over the lap of the
mother.
7. Do correct and proper handwashing.
8. Wear clean gloves.
9. Stand on the right side of the mother throughout the
time giving care.
10. Inspect the breast for size and any abnormalities.
 Inverted nipple

 Cracked nipple

 Retracted nipples.
 Any signs of Infection. (Mastitis, Cellulitis)

11. Palpate the breast from superficial to deep for


tenderness, pain, tumors, and exaggerated lymph
nodes, etc.
12. Squeeze the breast and observe the secretions.
13. Clean the secretions and dispose of it accordingly.
14. Clean the breast in the following order: Nipple –
areolas (Primary – Secondary) – breast –
inframammary crease – axilla.
15. Dry the breast with gauze pieces following the
same order.
16. Cover the further breast exposing the near one.
17. Put the baby on to the breast.
18. After breastfeeding, assist mother to clean the
breast in the same manner.
19. Make the mother and baby comfortable after care.
20. Record any abnormal findings.
