Lesson 1:: Unit Circle and Radian Measure

1. The document discusses the unit circle and radian measure. The unit circle is centered at the origin with a radius of 1 unit. Angles can be measured in degrees or radians. 2. Conversions between degrees and radians are shown using formulas. Positive angles rotate counterclockwise from the initial side on the x-axis, while negative angles rotate clockwise. 3. Examples of converting specific degree and radian measures are calculated to demonstrate the formulas. Problems involving finding coordinates on the unit circle based on angle measures are worked through.

Unit Circle and

Radian Measure
T. Perez
1. Illustrate the unit circle
Today's and its relationship to radian
Objective measure.
2. Convert degree measure
to radian measure and vice
versa.
3. Manifest respect in every
situations.
What is unit circle?
 The Unit Circle is the circle centered at the origin with radius
1 unit (hence, the “unit” circle).
 The equation of this circle is x2 + y2 = 1 .
 A diagram of the unit circle is shown below:
Drawing Angles in Standard Position
 An angle is said to be in standard position if the vertex of the angle is at (0, 0) and
the initial side of the angle lies along the positive x-axis.

 If the angle measure is positive, then  If the angle measure is negative, then
the angle has been created by a the angle has been created by a
counterclockwise rotation from the clockwise rotation from the initial to the
initial to the terminal side. terminal side.
Angle Measure Rotation Direction
 Angles can be measured in two  Positive angles start on the positive x-
ways axis and rotate counterclockwise.
1. Degrees  Negative angles start on the positive x-
2. Radians axis, also, and rotate clockwise.
Converting Radians to Degrees and
vice-versa
1. Degrees to Radians 2. Radians to Degrees
Formula: θ˚ × ( π/180˚ ) Formula: θradians × ( 180˚/π )
Example: Convert 120˚ into radians Example: Convert π/5 into degrees.
Solution: Solution:
θ˚ × ( π/180˚ ) θradians × ( 180˚/π )
= 120˚× ( π/180˚ ) Substitute = Π/5 × ( 180˚/π ) Substitute
= 120˚π/180˚ Simplify = 180˚π/5π Simplify
= 2π/3 Final answer = 36˚ Final answer

=120˚
Problem 1
A goat is tied in the center of a circular
field. What is the coordinate of the
position of the goat if he gazed at a
30˚ angle and walks 1 m?
 Let P (x, y) be the coordinate of the goat in the circular field.

Solution

Therefore, the goat gazed at the

coordinate
Problem 2
Find the exact location or coordinate of
the ship in the radar that has
intersection of the terminal side of a
225-degree angle in standard position.
 Let P (x, y) be the coordinate of the position of the ship

Therefore, the position of the ship

is located at
