Modelling & Stress Analysis of A Simply Supported Beam Subjected Point Load

The document describes modeling and stress analysis of a simply supported beam subjected to point loads using ANSYS. It provides the problem statement of analyzing a 3.5m simply supported beam with two point loads. It then shows the analytical calculation of reaction forces, shear force diagram, and bending moment diagram. The calculations find the reaction forces are RA=2.58kN and RD=3.42kN, with bending moments of MA=MD=0, MC=3.42kNm, and MB=2.55kNm.

For the simply supported beam of span 3.5 m which is loaded with point
loads as shown in the figure, Compute the Reaction Forces, shear force
and bending moment diagrams.
PROBLEM
Cross sectional area of the beam is 0.1m x 0.1m , and the Young’s modulus

Problem Solution by Strength of Material Approach
To determine the Reaction Force at the supports: Let the reaction forces
at supports A and D be RA and RD respectively:

Σ𝐹y = 0
RA+RD- 2 - 4 =0
RA+RD = 6
A B C D
ΣMA = 0
3.5RD – (4 X 2.5) – (2 x 1) =0
3.5RD = 12
∴ RD = 3.42 kN

RA+RD = 6
∴ RA = 2.58 kN
Problem Solution by Strength of Material Approach
• SHEAR FORCE:

Shear force at a section in a beam is the force that tries to shear

off the section and is obtained as the algorithmic sum of all the
forces including the reactions, acting normal to the axis of the
beam either to the left or right of the beam section.

• SHEAR FORCE DIAGRAM:

A diagram in which the ordinate represents shear force and the

abscissa represents the position of the section is called shear
force diagram.
Problem Solution by Strength of Material Approach

To determine the Shear Force & Plot the SFD: A B C D

SFD= 3.42 kN
SFC = 3.42-4 = -0.58kN
3.42
SFB = -0.58-2 = -2.58kN
A B C D
SFA = -2.58 +2.58 =0 0
-0.58

-2.58

• BENDING MOMENT:

A moment is a force multiplied by the distance between that

force and the point of interest measured in foot-pounds or
newton-meters. A bending moment exists in a mechanical
structure when an applied moment causes that structure to
bend.

• BENDING MOMENT DIAGRAM:

A diagram in which the ordinate represents bending moment

and the abscissa represents the position of the section is called
bending moment diagram.
Problem Solution by Strength of Material Approach

To determine the Bending Moment & Plot the BMD:

MD= 0
MC = 3.42 x 1 = 3.42 kNm 2.55
3.42

MB = (3.42 x2.5) –(4x1.5)= 2.55 kNm

A B C D
MA =0
Conclusion

Parameter Analytical Approach Ansys Approach % Error

RA = 2.58 kN
Reaction Forces RD = 3.42 kN
SFA = 0
Shear Forces SFB = -0.52 kN
SFC = 0.58 kN
SFD= 3.42 kN
MA = MD = 0
MC= 3.42 kNm
