Skillful LS3 Grammar Presentation Unit 2
In Academic English we use defining relative clauses when we give definitions, explain
processes and describe inventions. Defining relative clauses give essential information
about a noun or noun phrase. We introduce a defining relative clause with a relative
pronoun WHO, WHICH, THAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHOSE and WHY.
• A patent is a right given to the owner of an invention that stops other people from
copying or using the invention without permission.
• In 2009 Brian Acton and Jan Koum built an innovative app which enabled people
across the world to instantly message each other.
• Susan Kare was the designer who created the unique Happy Mac icon on Apple
computers.
We can leave out the relative pronoun in the above sentence as it is an object pronoun and
refers back to the object of the clause.
NOTE: When giving a formal presentation we can replace who with whom when it is an object
pronoun. This is not very common in American English.
• The designer whom I met at the conference has produced a new app.
NOTE: We cannot leave the relative pronoun out when it is the subject of the clause.
WHERE
We use “where” to give information about a place.
• The laboratory where they research GMOs is next to the campus.
WHEN
We use “when” to give information about time.
• The time when most undergraduates apply for places at universities is between October
and December.
WHY
We use “why” to give information about a reason.
• The world food crisis is the main reason why we need genetically modified crops.
Weak forms are syllable sounds that we do not stress when speaking naturally.
In defining relative clauses the relative pronoun that is often pronounced in its weak form.
It is pronounced in its weak form as it does not carry the main content of the sentence but does
help us construct a grammatically correct sentence.
It can be difficult to hear the weak form of that in connected speech but it is important we
listen for it and we must remember to use that when it is the subject of the defining relative
clause.
