Root Word

• A root word is a word in its simplest form.


• A root word has nothing added to it.
• Examples:

• Affixes : word part added to the root


word
• Divided in two forms :
1. Prefix
2. Suffix
Prefixes
A prefix is a group of letters added before the root of
a word.
For example, the word "unhappy" consists of the
prefix "un-" which means "not" combined with the
root or stem word "happy"; the word "unhappy“
means "not happy."
Prefix Examples

De- Decode, decrease


Dis- Disagree, disappear
Il- Illegal, illogical
Im- Impossible, improper
In Inaction, invisible
Mis- Mislead, misplace
Non- Nonsense
Pre- Prehistory
Pro- Proactive, program
Re- Reappear, react
Un- Undo, unusual, unequal
A suffix is a group of letters placed after the root of a word.

For example,
the word flavorless consists of the root word "flavor"
combined with the
suffix "-less" which means "without"; the word
"flavorless" means "having
no flavor."
Suffix Examples
Able- ible Comfortable, reversible
Al- Annual, comical
Er- Bigger, stronger
Est- Strongest, finest
Ful- Beautiful, grateful
Ily- Easily, happily
Ing- Acting, showing
Less- Friendless, tireless
Ness- Kindness
Y Noisy, messy
Remember that these lists of prefixes and suffixes do
not cover all suffixes and prefixes. There are many
others
Use a prefixes or suffixes to find the opposite of these verbs:

1- wrap unwrap
2- use misuse
3- agree disagree
4- engage disengage
5- behave misbehave
6- understand misunderstand
7- fold
unfold
8- spell
misspell
9- connect    
disconnect
10- close
disclose
