Brain Computer Interface: Presentation By: Bandaru Sri Priya 201FA04002 CSE (Sec A)

This document presents information about brain-computer interfaces (BCI). It discusses how BCI systems allow users to interact with computers using brain activity by reading brain waves and translating them into commands. There are three types of BCI: invasive, non-invasive, and partially invasive. BCI has advantages like allowing paralyzed people to control prosthetics and communicate their thoughts, but also has disadvantages like high cost and the technology still being in early stages of development.

BRAIN COMPUTER

INTERFACE

PRESENTATION BY:
BANDARU SRI PRIYA
201FA04002
CSE(Sec A)
INTRODUCTION

 Brain-Computer Interface(BCI) is a device that

enable its users to interact with computers by mean of
brain activity.
 These are the systems that link our brains directly to
the computers.
 Here the brain waves are read and translated into
commands for electronic devices.
Because of these commands the electronic devices or robotic parts like robotic
hands and robotic legs will be operated.

So there is no need of using our body for performing tasks on electronic devices.
Working
The reason why we are able to control electronic devices using our brain alone is
because our brain use electronic signals.
Human brain has 86 billion neurons and each one sends signals across thousands
of synapses.
For example when we want to move our arm, a region
in our brain becomes active as neurons fire, if the voltage
changes by large amout over a short interval a neuron
generates action pothential and signal sent between the
neurons.
This action potential can be measured by electrodes, through metal
needles that record voltage change.
The more needles in electrode gives more accurate measurement.
 All this process is done by implanting some chips into brain, which contain
electrodes to measure the action potential.
 These chips are implanted by some medical process.
Implanting electrodes into brain is risky because it may cause bleeding or scarring
or the electrods could be rejected and if they need to be taken out at later point, it
will be complicative.
So, a nice alternative is invented.
They are Electro Encephalo Graphy (EEG) caps.
TYPES OF BCI
 There are three types of BCI
• Invasive
• Non-invasive
• Partially invasive
This Brain Computer Interface is an extrodinary invention which is very much useful
for Paralyzed people.
It makes them not to dependent on others.
For example, if a normal paralyzed man wants to write something he cannot do
it.With the help of this BCI he can write or text on a computer screen.
BCI USED FOR WRITING
 A paralyzed man imaged holding a
pen on a piece of paper. Then, he
tried to write.
 Electrodes implanted in the man’s
brain detect activity when he
attempts handwriting.
 An algorithm can decode the
activity patterns produced for each
letter.
 Those patterns are then translated
into text that appears on a screen.
ADVANTAGES
 Allow paralyzed peoplle to control prosthetic limbs
with their mind.
 Allow a mute person to have their thoughts displayed
and spoken by computer.
 Allow gamers to control their video games through
mind.
DISADVANTAGES
 High cost
 Requires excessive training for proper usage
 This technology is still in beginning stage
 Ill effects in the brain due to viral attacks
 Electrodes out the skull can detect very few electric
signals from brain
