The Philippines a Century


Hence
• Essay written by Rizal to forecast the future of the
country within a hundred years
• Jose Rizal’s Filipinas Dentro De Cien Años or
the The Philippines a Century Hence was
serialized on September 30, October 31, December
15, 1889 and February 15, 1890 in the fortnightly
review La Solidaridad of Madrid.
1. Spain’s implementation of its military policies
2. Deterioration and disappearance of Filipino indigenous culture
3. Passivity and submissiveness to the Spanish colonizers
The Indolence of the Filipinos
• A socio-political essay, Sobre la indolencia de los
filipinos was written by José Rizal as a response to the
accusation of Indio or Malay indolence and was
published in La Soildaridad in five consecutive issues.
Natives realized that such oppression in their society by
foreign colonizers must no longer be tolerated.
• Keeping the people uneducated and ignorant
• Keeping the people impoverished
• Exterminating the people as an alternative to hinder the progress
To the Young Women of
Malolos
Jose Rizal’s legacy to Filipino women is embodied in this famous
essay where he addresses all women such as; mothers, wives, the
unmarried, etc.
“To the Women of Malolos” was originally written in Tagalog .
The salient points contained in this letter
are as follows;
• The rejection of the spiritual authority of the friars
• The defense of private judgment
• Qualities Filipino mothers need to possess
• Duties and responsibilities of Filipino mothers to their children
• Duties and responsibilities of a wife to her husband
To the Women of Malolos” centers around five salient points
(Zaide &Zaide, 1999):

1. Filipino mothers should teach their children love of God, country and
fellowmen.
2. Filipino mothers should be glad and honored, like Spartan
mothers, to offer their sons in defense of their country
3. Filipino women should know how to protect their dignity and honor.
4. Filipino women should educate themselves aside from retaining
their good racial values.
5. Faith is not merely reciting prayers and wearing religious pictures.
It is living the real Christian way with good morals and manners.
RIZAL’S MESSAGE TO FILIPINO WOMEN

• Rizal expresses great joy and satisfaction over the battle they had
fought and his ultimate desire was for women to be offered the
same opportunities as those received by men in terms of education.
Rizal’s advice to unmarried men and women

• 1. A noble and honored name


• 2. A manly heart
• 3. A high spirit incapable of being satisfied with engendering
slaves.
