LO1 Recognise common equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages and know how
to change between them

Fractions, percentages and decimals

are all PART of a bigger number.
If you cut a whole number into 2 equal parts, one of
those parts is called a

½ or 50% or 0.5
So,
½ of 10 =5
50% of 10 =5
0.5 of 10 = 5 (try this: 0.5 X 10)

 ½ is the same as 50% is the same

as 0.5

So If   = 0.2
Work out the following:
 What does equal?

• 0.4

 What does equal?

• 0.6

What percentage is the same as 0.2?

• 20%
25% can be written as a fraction...

25 out of 100

25
100

This is the same as saying 25 hundredths.

Tens Units . Tenths Hundredths

...AND as a decimal: 0 0 . 2 5
25 = 0.25
25% =
100

Can you make the fraction above smaller?

(Divide the top number and bottom number by the same
number)
Answer:

rite these percentages as Fractions in their simplest form and then
cimals.

10% 80% 34% 27% 5%

0.1 0.8 0.34 0.27 0.05

O2 Calculate a percentage of a quantity

How can we work out a percentage of a quantity?

50% of 2 0
of 30 21%

50% of 40 25% of 30 75% of 8

0

f 8 1 % of 6 0 10 %

f 20 15% of 60
How would you find….

1%?
%?
5 0 25% 75%
? ?
10% 5%?
?
Calculate: 15% of 54kg

Find 5%
Find 10%

= 54kg ÷ 10 5% is half of 10%

=0.5 x 5.4 = 2.7kg
= 5.4kg

15% is 10% + 5%
= 5.4kg + 2.7kg

= 8.1kg
alculate: 12% of £80.

= 10% of £80 is £8 and 1% of £80 is £0.80.

12% = 10% + 1% + 1%

= £8 + £0.80 + £0.80

£9.60
13% of 45…
How could we calculate this quickly and easily
on a calculator???
13% of 45…
We can use multipliers.

What is 13% as a decimal? 0.13

Simply, all you do on your calculator is your
multiplier (0.13) x your number (45).

0.13 x 45 = 5.85
Calculate: 45% of 160cm.

a) 45% = 0.45
so, 45% of 160 = 0.45 x 160 = 72cm
Calculate: 52% of £460.

b) 52% = 0.52
so, 52% of 460 = 0.52 x 460 = 239.2

= £239.20

Remember to always write a

money answer with 2 decimal
places.
ry These

Calculate the following:

a) 12.5% of £26. £3.25.

b) 6.5% of 34kg. 2.21kg.

c) 26.8% of £2100. £562.80.

d) 7.75% of £84. £6.51.

e) 16.2% of 265m. 42.93m.

f) 0.8% of £3000. £24.

LO3 Increase or decrease a quantity by a given percentage

When increasing amounts by percentages you can use the

method we looked at previously, but an easier way to do
these types of questions is to use a multiplier.

For example, an increase of 6% is equivalent to the original

100% plus the extra 6%. This is total of 106% and is
equivalent to the multiplier 1.06.

For example, an increase of 13% is equivalent to the original

100% plus the extra 13%. This is total of 113% and is
equivalent to the multiplier 1.13.

Let’s try some…!

22
Example: Increase 74cm by 9%.

A 9% increase is a multiplier of 1.09

so, 74cm increased by 9% =

1.09 x 74 = 80.66cm

23
Example: Increase £6.80 by 5%.

A 5% increase is a multiplier of 1.05

so, £6.80 increased by 5% =

1.05 x 6.80 =7.14
= £7.14

Remember to always write a money

answer with 2 decimal places.
24
This process is practically the same for decreasing
amounts by percentages.

For example, a decrease of 7% is 7% less than the original

100%, so it represents
100% - 7% = 93% of the original. This is a multiplier of
0.93.

For example, a decrease of 23% is 23% less than the

original 100%, so it represents
100% - 23% = 77% of the original. This is a multiplier of
0.77.
Let’s try some…!
25
Example: Decrease 56cm by 15%.

A 15% decrease is a multiplier of 0.85

so, 56cm decreased by 15% =
0.85 x 56 = 47.6cm

26
Example: Decrease £8.60 by 5%.

A 5% decrease is a multiplier of 0.95

so, £8.60 decreased by 5% =
0.95 x 8.60 = 8.17
= £8.17

Remember to always write a

money answer with 2 decimal
places.
27
You have £100.

Increase this £100 by Decrease this £100 by

10% and then decrease 10% and then increase
the answer by 10%. the answer by 10%.

100 x 1.1 = 110 100 x 0.9 = 90

110 x 0.9 = 99 90 x 1.1 = 99
£99 £99

What do you notice about these answers?

Increase and Decrease Percentages
Do the following using a multiplier:
Increase £20 by 88%

• Multiplier = 1.88 20 x 1.88 = £37.60

Decrease £487 by 27%

• Multiplier = (100-27)/100 = 0.73 487 x 0.73 = £355.51

Increase 150 by 10 % and decrease the same by 15 %. Find the new number in each case.

• 165 and 127.5
