Organization
• It executes the national government's
responsibilities for the control,
direction and promotion of tourism.
• All countries, engaged in tourism, have a NTO
which plays a leading role in both the
formulation and implementation of the
government’s tourism programme.
• It is also responsible for coordinating different
activities of all the bodies interested in
tourism development.
The national tourist may be a full-
organization
fledged ministry,directorate general, a
department,
corporation or board.
Its arrangement and constitution
depends on factors like political
structure of the country, the level of
economic development, potential value of
tourism to the economy and the level of
tourism development.
Functions of NTO
• Research: - A basic function of NTO is the
research of tourism potential in the
country (natural and man-made both).
• Information and promotion within the
country: - To provide important and
accurate up to date information to the
tourists visiting country or at various place.
• Regularization and standards of lodging and
restaurants: - To ensure the maintenance of
appropriate standards of quality and services
of hotels and restaurants.
• Control of activities of private travel
agencies: - To ensure the appropriate
standards of quality and services of the
travel agents in terms of efficiency, comfort,
economy and protection is maintained.
• Publicity over-seas: - It includes
advertisements for publicity of all kinds
(print media, electronic media) public
relation, distribution of print material.
• International relations: - To develop
international understanding while bringing
diverse people face to face, develop social
cultural values/understandings among all
the people of the world making friends to
set a good image of the country at
international level.
Four broad areas:
• 1.
Administration
• 2. Production
• 3. Marketing
• 4. Financial
• The Ministry of Tourism, a branch of the
Government of India, is the apex body for
formulation and administration of the rules,
regulations and laws relating to the
development and promotion of tourism in India.
• This Ministry is headed by the Union
Minister for Tourism and supported
by Minister of State for Tourism.
• Directorate General of Tourism has a
field formation of 20 offices within the
country and 14 offices abroad and one
sub- ordinate office/project i.e. Indian
Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering
(IISM)/ Gulmarg Winter Sports Project.
Role and functions of the
ministry of tourism
It plays a crucial role in coordinating
and supplementing the efforts of the
State/Union Territory Governments,
catalyzing private investment,
strengthening promotional and
marketing efforts and in providing
trained manpower resources
• The Ministry of Tourism has five Regional
offices
located at:-
• Kolkata (East)
• Mumbai (West)
• Delhi (North)
• Chennai (South)
• Guwahati (North East).
• These are headed by an officer of the level of
Deputy Director General designated as
Regional Director.
• Each Regional Officer (called RD Office) has sub
regional officers in their jurisdiction, totaling 15
in number.
The Ministry of Tourism has six
Regional
Overseas offices located at:-
1.Sydney, 2.Frankfurt, 3.Tokyo,
4.Dubai,
5. London 6.New York
There are seven sub-regional offices located
at :-
1.Toronto, 2.Paris, 3.Milan 4.Amsterdam 5.Los
Angeles
6.Johannesburg
7.Singapore
The main function of these 13 offices is to
carry out
Overseas Marketing
Position India in the tourism generating
markets as a preferred tourism destination.
To promote various Indians tourism
products, etc.
