TENSE AND ASPECT

Tense : Tense is a form of verb in English to show the


time of occurrence of an action , activity or event
whether it is happening in the present , in the future , or
in the past .

Aspect : Aspect is a verb form that shows how the


meaning of the verb (action or state) has been
completed , occurs repeatedly, or continuously
(progressive).

The presence of tenses always comes along with the


presence of aspect. In simple terms , tense means the
form of time while aspect describes how something
happened .

It means that we don ' t know about the event itself whether it is punctual or
durative; what we only know is that the event completely occurred .

Example :

1. I met an extraordinary man did unusual things


2. Mr. John built his dream house

Saeed ( 2004 : 288 ) says that Imperfective Aspect is the


contrast of perfective aspect that is to show an
uncompleted event or action .

• Examples :
a . I was fixing my car in the garage.
b . I was fixing my car in the garage when my mother
called me .

Inchoative has a verb which expresses a change of state in a


sentence (Richards and Schmidt, 2002 : 251 ).

For example :
1. The cake browned [ means : the cake becomes brown ].
2. Donald reaches the door
3. My grandfather ' s hair turns white
R E SU L T A T IV E
ASPECT

Resultative is the contrast of inchoative . It expresses a process of an


event having a final point of completion then we pay our attention to
the end of the process (Saeed, 2004 : 121 ).

• EXAMPLES:
1 . The store is closed

The state of being closed is resulted from the actions of closing .


Resultative aspect also occurs in the verbs which have the meaning of
“ cause to move ". The example of it is :

1 . Mahesa pushed his toys off the shelf

It is common to assume that progressive aspect is the


progressive form of an event in its prototypical meaning to
indicate that a process , activity, or action is , was, will be in
progress at some particular reference in time (Cruse , 2004 :
290 ).

EXAMPLES:
1. We are watching television
2. Jack is smoking
