Assignment 2 Instrumentation

This document describes a student project to design a circuit simulation using a light dependent resistor (LDR) sensor. The objectives are to understand the LDR sensor function and design a circuit simulation that successfully operates. The project is an automatic street night light that uses an LDR to detect light levels and activate a bi-colored LED. The circuit includes an LDR, operational amplifier, resistors, potentiometer, and LED. When light falls on the LDR, its resistance decreases and the circuit activates the LED. The simulation will be created in Proteus 8 Professional software.

ASSIGNMENT II / PROJECT
SESSION 2020/2021

INTRODUCTION
In this assignment, we need to do a project based on the sensor we chose for
Assignment 1. With that sensor, we need to create a circuit simulation. The sensor we
chose was Light Dependent Resistor (LDR). A light dependent resistor (LDR) is a light
controlled variable resistor made by semiconductor materials, working based on
photoelectric effect. Photoresistor is used to convert optical signals into electrical
signals, and then signals processed by the corresponding instrument. These
photoresistors are also known as photoconductive cells. A photoresistor can be applied
in light sensitive detector circuits and light activated and dark-activated switching
circuits acting as a resistance semiconductor.
OBJECTIVE
• To understand the function of the chosen sensor.
• To design a circuit simulation based on LDR.
• Make sure our circuit simulate successfully.
• To understand the functions of each components we used in our circuit.
WORKING PRINCIPLE
Light Dependent Resistance’s working principle is photoconductivity, which is known as
an optical phenomenon. If the light is absorbed by a matter, then the conductivity of the
matter reduces. When the light falls on the LDR, then the electrons in the valence band
of the matter are excited to the conduction band. So, when light having enough energy
strikes on the device, more electrons are excited to the conduction band which results
in a larger number of charge carriers. When the effect of this process and the flow of
the current starts flowing often, the resistance of the device will decrease.

CIRCUIT SIMULATION DESIGN

COMPONENTS WE USED FOR THIS CIRCUIT ARE :
 LIGHT DEPENDENT RESISTOR (LDR)
• to indicate the presence or absence of light and to measure the light intensity.

 OPERATIONAL AMPLIFIER (OP AMP)

• to amplify weak electric signals.

1K RESISTOR
• to pull the base of the transistor to ground when the control signal is a missing input.
 220 OHM RESISTOR
• to limit the current flow, to adjust signal levels and terminate the transmission lines.

POTENTIONMETER
• to control the electrical devices.

 BI-COLORED LED MODEL (BLUE and YELLOW)

• to emits light when the current flows through it the LED.
• bi-colored LED model was chosen to simplify the design of an electronic assemblage while emitting
light in two colors.
