Career In Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy Means -

• Science which involves the assessment, maintenance, and restoration of the


physical function and performance of the body

• It treats people with degenerative disorders, the physically challenged, sportspeople


and those suffering from neurological disorders.

• Also includes inborn and acquired muscular and other deformities, post operative
care, restoration of movement, and removal of any hindrance in normal physical
function of the body.

• Apart from exercising, the treatment can also include heat radiation, water therapy,
massages, diathermy, and traction and so on.
Qualifications Required -

• Minimum 50% Passing in standard Twelth exam


• Clearing of Several Entrance exams For Different Colleges-

I. All India Pre medical test


II. Individual state entrances, like Maharashtra common Entrance Test (for students
with domiciliary status)
III. By central government colleges
IV. Private colleges and Deemed universities (like Manipal university, DY Patil
university)
Course Contents-
4 ½ years course - 4 years of Academic’s
½ year of Practical’s
Breakup – 1st year- comprises of medical subjects [similar to MBBS] –anatomy, physiology,
biochemistry, and two physiotherapy subjects -electro therapy and exercise therapy.

2nd year -pharmacology, pathology and microbiology, and the same two physiotherapy subjects
as the first year.

3rd year- consists of Medicine, orthopaedics, paediatrics, and the two physiotherapy subjects.
And the students start getting introduced to application of physiotherapy in various areas.

4th year- concentrated areas like physiotherapy in musculoskeletal area, physiotherapy in


neurological area, physiotherapy in community based rehabilitation and physiotherapy in
medical and surgical area.

Half year- monthly rotations so as to give you appropriate exposure in each area.
Certain Issues Related to be Known
-
• Government colleges have an edge over private institutes in this branch, Due to
the exposure they give to the students.

• Opting for a one or two year diploma or any kind of distance learning is not a good
idea – They are being de-recognized by Indian Association of physiotherapists
Placement Opportunities -

• Joining of government hospitals as a staffer. Pay is decent and the exposure great.

• Teaching option, after doing a Masters of Physiotherapy , as they are considered


for that.

• Joining a private hospital but the pay can be miserable to good there. It all depends
on the hospital policy.

• If good finance is available- then setting up own clinic and home visits. And to
get more contacts for visits, one can get in touch with a few physicians and
orthopaedic surgeons
