The London Stock Exchange is one of the oldest stock exchanges in the world. It began in 1698 when stockbrokers started gathering in coffee houses to trade. Over time, the stockbrokers formed their own building to trade stocks. In 1801, the London Stock Exchange was officially established. Today, it offers several routes for international companies to access capital markets in London such as through the Alternative Investment Market for small/medium enterprises or Global Depository Receipts for larger companies. The London Stock Exchange and regulatory activities are overseen by the Financial Services Authority.
