Lesson 1 - Communication (Autosaved)

Communication involves the exchange of thoughts, ideas, and information between individuals. It is a process that requires a sender to encode a message and transmit it through a channel to a receiver who decodes and provides feedback. Effective communication depends on selecting an appropriate channel, clearly encoding the message to avoid misunderstandings, and considering the context and potential noise that could interfere.

Communication

Connecting with people has become instant in this

advanced age also known as digital age due to the
availability of different technologies around us.
Through internet, communicating with another human
being is just a second away but cultivating a good
relationship is another thing. Placing a good job and
making oneself competitive and at par with others
internationally entail hard work and competence in the
use of communication.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

 1. What is Communication?
 2. What is the so-called digital age?
 3. Why do we need competence in
communicating our ideas?
WHAT IS COMMUNICATION ?
 Theword communication has been derived from
the Latin word “communis”, which means
common or to share. Communication is a process
of making connections with people through verbal
or non-verbal approach. Speaking verbally is the
most common way of communicating and
expressing thoughts but not all are limited to
language, movements and gestures also form non-
verbal statement. Communication is nature to
humans. It is your ability as feeling, thinking and
socializing beings.
Definition
 From an education student, communication is an
exchange of ideas between persons where knowledge is
constructed by them.
 From an Engineering and Technology student, it is
expressing ideas to become thinkers, speakers and
writers.
 The communication student, on the other hand, defines
communication as an exchange of ideas and opinions
and creating meanings out of it. A Business student,
however, defines communication as ability to process
information in an efficient and effective manner.
Communication Process
 The creation of meaning and organization of
thoughts and putting these in oral or written form
require competence in order to acquire good and
effective communication.
 The communicator should also consider the
person or the audience he/she is communicating
with.

 The goal is to achieve clarity of expression and

understanding.
Communication Process
 Persons who are exchanging information,
thoughts, ideas, opinions or even emotions or
feelings should know how to communicate well to
achieve understanding.
 Clarity of ideas would lead to a harmonious
relationship may it be personal, business aspect
or international relations.
 Communication goes through stages in the
transmission of message. The communication
won’t progress without the other elements.
Communication Process
 Communication takes place, everywhere at any time.
It changes in various circumstances and affects
variation among members as the development takes
place which implies dynamics and change.
 It also indicates parts interacting and influencing each
other so as to function as a whole. Communication
process involves steps on how to convey messages.
 It involves two parties that may be an individual or a
group of people that each has a purpose of sending
and receiving the message.
Communication Process
 Communication channel describes the process or
way in which people are able to communicate.
 This can be done face to face or through different
media such as conversations via phone calls, text
messages, email, web or Internet including social
media such as Facebook and Twitter, radio and
TV, written letters, brochures and reports.
 Appropriate communication channel is vital for
effective communication
Components of Communication
 Several elements work together to complete a desired
outcome as communication takes place.
 The basic components of communication process are
the communicators (sender and receiver), message
channel, feedback, noise, situation, and the
interdependence of all the elements in the process.
By that they are interrelated and work systematically.
 It was Harold D. Lasswell, a communication theorist,
who introduced the communication model that has
been regarded as the most influential communication
model.
Lasswell Model
 In Lasswell’s model, the first step is through the source
that encodes the message that will be transferred. The
source is known as the sender.
 The second step by means of an idea that will be
transferred which is called the message. This message will
not be sent without the means to send it thus, there’s a
medium also known as the channel where the message is
coursed through.
 It will be decoded to create meaning and understanding
which will be done by the decoder or receiver of the
message. The message received will have an impact or
effect. Thus a feedback will be created.
Elements of the Communication Process
A sender or a source is the
one who transfers message or
information to the receiver
who accepts it.
The information must be
encoded by the sender into a
form suitable to the
communication channel while
the receiver will decode the
message to understand its

Elements of Communication Process
 In a telephone conversation, the sender of the
information is the person who calls and wants to say
something. The message is the information to be sent.
The channel is the telephone which is the medium of
the conversation. In the conversation, the receiver is
the person on the other line that provides feedback.
 Persons who are exchanging information, thoughts,
ideas, opinions or even emotions or feelings should know
how to communicate well to achieve understanding.
Clarity of ideas would lead to a harmonious relationship
may it be personal, business aspect or international
relations.
Message Channels

 Messages should be encoded to a method carried out by a

communication channel thus it can be into spoken words by
transferring or through written communication for complex
information.
 The use of language in conveying the information should be
taken to consideration, it is important to transfer the message
clearly to eliminate likely causes of confusion and
misunderstanding in decoding of the receiver. General public will
decodes and understand messages in different ways based upon
any barriers to communication which might be present.
 Experience and understanding of the message’s context,
psychological state, and the time and place of receipt as well as
many other potential factors greatly affects the decoding
process. Understanding how the message will be translated, and
anticipating as many of the potential sources of misunderstanding
as possible, is the art of a successful communicator.
Elements of Communication Process
 . Feedback
Decoders or receivers are expected to give response on how they have
understood the information sent either through verbal or non-verbal
communication. It is essential to pay attention to this feedback in order to assess
whether the message has been clearly transferred and understood as intended or
in case there are confusions, it can be corrected.
  Noise
Communication is not always smooth because of the barrier that interferes in
the communication process. This barrier is called Noise. There are two kinds of
noise. These are internal and external noise. Internal noise happens when
something is bothering you. You might be thinking about a problem at home or
you might be hungry at the moment and you are thinking of what food to eat.
External noise, on the other hand, is the noise or interference in the
surroundings. This can be a distracting sound of electric fan, siren or shouting of
students along the corridor.
Element of Communication Process

. Context
This refers to the situation or setting in which
communication is taking place. There are two types of
contexts: the physical and temporal. Physical context
refers to the setting itself which includes location, time,
weather or noise level.
Temporal, on the other hand, are what people expect from
a given situation based on experience. If Anna and her
friends used to hang in one’s house to study, then most likely
if somebody invites to hang out with a friend’s house, a
member of the group will think that a group study will occur.
