Calligraphy and Woodblocks

- Calligraphy originated in China and was introduced to Japan and Korea, where it developed distinct styles but maintained influences from Chinese calligraphy. It is considered an art form as well as means of communication. - Woodblock printing developed from printing on textiles in China and was adapted in Japan during the Edo period. It became one of Japan's major visual art forms, especially ukiyo-e prints depicting scenes of daily life. Woodblock printing was also used for books in Korea. - The document provides instructions for creating block prints using potato halves as the base and carving designs before applying paint and pressing paper to create simple prints. Examples of student block prints are also shown.

between 704-751 AD.

MATERIALS : Potato cut in half, spoon, paper clip, watercolor/poster color, tissue
paper, barbecue stick

PROCEDURE:

1. Trace the design on the surface of the potato using barbecue stick.
2. Using the spoon, carve out the surface that has to be blank,
3. Dry and clean the area to prepare for printing.
4. Apply paint to the carved surface then press it to your paper. Remember to do test
prints
5. Repeat the method to make a composition. You may use other colors but always
remember to clean the surface of the potato before using other colors.
6. Let your work dry completely.
