What happens after a star
becomes a neutron star?
A star with a mass of about 1.5 to 2 or 3 times that of our Sun will collapse even
further, ending up as a neutron star, perhaps 20 kilometers in diameter. The star
ultimately becomes a black hole, a region in space so massive that no light or matter
can ever escape from it.
What happens after a neutron
star dies?
The infalling outer envelope of the star is halted and flung outwards by a flux of
neutrinos produced in the creation of the neutrons, becoming a supernova. The
remnant left is a neutron star. If the remnant has a mass greater than about 3 M ☉, it
collapses further to become a black hole.
Can a neutron star collapse
into a black hole?
A neutron star that is left-over after a supernova is actually a remnant of the massive
star which went supernova. If the star is massive enough it can collapse directly to
form a black hole without a supernova explosion in less than half a second.
What would happen if a
neutron star hit a black hole?
When a neutron star meets a black hole that’s much more massive, such as the
recently observed events, says Susan Scott, an astrophysicist with the Australian
National University, “we expect that the two bodies circle each other in a spiral.
Eventually the black hole would just swallow the neutron star like Pac-Man.”
How long does a star take to
collapse?
So, how long does a supernova take to explode? A few million years for the star to
die, less than a quarter of a second for Its core to collapse, a few hours for the
shockwave to reach the surface of the star, a few months to brighten, and then just
few years to fade away.
What causes a star to collapse
into a black hole?
When the cores collapse to form dense stellar objects called neutron stars, they blast
off the outer layers of the star in a supernova. When the core collapses, the blast
wave slams into the dense material above, which thwarts the explosion. Instead of
creating a supernova, the star implodes, forming a black hole.
