Surface Area and Volume of Prisms and Pyramids

This document discusses how to calculate the surface area and volume of prisms and pyramids. It defines prisms as solids with two parallel, similar bases and parallelogram sides, and pyramids as structures with a polygonal base and triangular faces that meet at a point. For prisms, the volume is calculated by multiplying the area of the cross-section by the height. For pyramids, the volume is one-third the area of the base multiplied by the vertical height. Worked examples are provided to demonstrate calculating the surface area and volume of specific prisms and pyramids.

INTRODUCTION

A surface area is the sum of the areas of all faces or surfaces on a 3D

shape. How do you find the surface area? Surface area is the total area of
all the faces of an object, the final step is to add all the individually
calculated area.

A volume is the amount of space that a substance or object occupies, or

that is enclosed within a container. Volume has different measurements
that depend on the shape.
PRISM
A Prism is a solid geometric figure whose two ends are
similar, equal, and parallel rectilinear figures, and whose
sides are parallelograms.

Types of prism and how they are measured

• Triangular prism (has triangular bases)
Volume=area of cross-section x length
• Square prism (has square bases)
Volume = base area × height of the square prism
• Rectangular prism (has rectangular bases)
Volume= width x depth x height
THE MEASUREMENT OF PRISM IN AN EXAMPLE

Find the volume and the surface area of the prism

Volume= A of cross-section x height

V = (8 x 6)/(2) x 12 = 288cm^3
12
12 Surface area= Sum of area of all faces =

10 2 x (8 x 6)/(2) +
12 x 8
12 x 6
12 x 10
8 = 333cm^2
PYRAMID
 A Pyramid is a monumental structure with a square
or triangular base and sloping sides that meet in a
point at the top.
A Pyramid is made of three main parts - apex, face,
and base.
The polygon base is most often in the shape of a
square.

 How can we measure the volume of pyramid?

Volume= 1/3 x area of base x vertical hight
THE MEASUREMENT OF PYRAMID IN AN EXAMPLE

Volume= 1/3 x area of base x vertical Hight

V=1/3 (100) x (18) = 600 cm^3
