Unit 5 - Demand & Freedom

The document contains two discourses from Mark 8-10 on the requirements of following Jesus. The first discourse calls for self-denial and taking up one's cross, which means renouncing self and actively submitting to Jesus' authority. The second discourse teaches that true greatness in the Kingdom of God comes through service, not status. It illustrates this using Jesus' example of welcoming a child. Both discourses emphasize abandoning worldly values of status and power in favor of humility, sacrifice and service to others.

INTRODUCTION
MARK 8:27-10:52 is
the framework of
Mark’s discipleship
discourse.

There are 2 discourses found in

this chapters
MARK 8:34-9:1 (NIV)
34
Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples
and said: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny
himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35 For whoever
wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life
for me and for the gospel will save it. 36 What good is it for a
man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? 37 Or what
can a man give in exchange for his soul? 38 If anyone is
ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful
generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he
comes in his Father's glory with the holy angels."

And he said to them, "I tell you the truth, some who are

1. Self Denial
What it does not mean?
- it does not
mean to deny
oneself of
something
(e.g. car,
house,etc.)
What it does mean -
– renounce self,

i.e. to stop
making self the
object or center
of one’s life and
action.

THE SECOND DISCOURSE
The authentic service:
Mark 9:33-50
Immediate context- Mark 9:30-32
They left that place and passed through Galilee. Jesus did not want
anyone to know where they were, because he was teaching his
disciples. He said to them, "The Son of Man is going to be betrayed
into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after three days he will
rise." But they did not understand what he meant and were afraid to
ask him about it. (NIV)
The disciples still did not
understand and did not dare
ask for fear of being rebuked.

They chose to occupy

themselves with arguing
about who was the greatest
among them.
Explanation of the discourse
vs.33-37
• v.35 underscores
that in the Kingdom
of God, true
greatness comes
through service of
others.

CONCLUSION

In the second

CONCLUSION
Instead of division
caused by seeking to be
the greatest, there
should be service,
acceptance and
