Blocks
A collection of objects that are combined into a single named object.

For mechanical engineers, for example, blocks may be the designs of


fasteners, cams, and valves.

For an electrical engineer, blocks may be capacitors, resistors, and


switches.

For an architect, blocks may be the designs of a bath-tub, a toilet, and a


sink.

For a civil engineer, blocks may be designs of steel sections

Draw the bath-tub below. All dimensions are in mm.

1. In the Home tab’s


Block panel, click
the CREATE tool.
The Block

box below opens.

2. In the Name text box, type Bath tub.

3. In the Base point group, click the pick point button and select the
base point for the block as shown below. By doing this, X, Y and Z
values are displayed in the Base Point group. For two-dimensional
drawings, the z-coordinate should remain at 0.

4. Next, you need to select the objects that you want as part of the
block. Click the Select Objects button in the Objects group, select the
objects as shown below and press Enter.

5. Select Millimetres from the
Block Unit drop-down list.

6. Make sure the Retain radio


button in the Objects group
is selected, and then click
OK. The bath tub drawing
is now a block with the
name Bath tub. The Retain
radio button keeps the
objects you select for your
block as they are, or
unchanged.
Inserting a block
1. In the Block Ribbon panel, click the Insert tool or type I.

2. Click the Name drop-down list to display a list of the available


blocks in the current drawing.

3. Click the block named Bath tub.

4. In the Insertion Point and Rotation groups, turn on the Specify On-
Screen option. With this option turned on, you’re asked to specify an
insertion point using your cursor.

5. Click OK to insert block.


Scaling & rotating a block
 The Specify On-Screen option in the Rotation group lets you specify
the rotation angle of the block graphically as you insert it.

 The Scale group options let you scale the block to a different size. You
can scale the block uniformly, or you can distort the block by
individually changing its X, Y, or Z scale factor.

 Download the AutoCAD file “Door” from Blackboard: Civil Engineering
Communication -> Learning Materials -> AutoCAD Drawing -> Lecture
Presentations -> AutoCAD – Week 22.

 Open a new AutoCAD drawing.

 In the Block Ribbon panel, click the Insert tool or type I and press Enter.

 In the Insert dialog box, click the Browse button to open the Select Drawing
File dialog box. Locate the Door.dwg file and double-click it.

 In the Insertion point groups, select Specify on screen and then click Ok.
Modifying a block
 The easiest way to unlock and redefine a block is to use the tool
EXPLODE. This will break the block into the elements created
for you to modify it.

 After you modify the block, you can redefine it by repeating the
process described in the previous slides.

 Open your submission from AutoCAD exercise 2.

 Create two layouts and name them as follows: 1.Proposed east front elevation
and 2.Proposed side north elevation.

 Right click on the name of the first layout “1. Proposed east front elevation”
and select Page Setup Manager… and then Modify.

 The Page Setup dialog box appears. Follow the
selections below and click Ok.

Select the viewport, right click
and select Properties

Misc, Standard
scale, and select
1:50 scale
Select the viewport, right click, go
on Display locked and select Yes

Right click on the name of the first layout “1.Existing ground floor plan” and select Page Setup
Manager… and then Modify. Click the “What to plot drop-down list” and select Window. Select the
perimeter of the frame and Center to plot. Click ok. Close Page Setup manager. The printing has been
set up.
