Chapter 1 Introduction To Anthropology

Anthropology is the study of human culture and evolutionary aspects of human biology. It is made up of four subfields: linguistic anthropology which studies human speech and language; cultural anthropology which studies all aspects of human behavior; archaeology which studies past cultures through material remains; and physical/biological anthropology which studies human biology within the framework of evolution. Anthropology takes a scientific approach using methods like developing hypotheses, collecting data, analyzing it, and verifying or disproving hypotheses to build theories. It aims to provide a broad understanding of the diversity of human experiences and how our species evolved.

Science
• A body of knowledge gained
through observation and
experimentation.

Caterpillar: Confidential Green

Scientific Method
• Science is a process of explaining natural
phenomena by means of observation.
• Data is collected that can be studied
and analyzed quantitatively.

Caterpillar: Confidential Green

Scientific Method - Process
• State the research problem.
• Develop a hypothesis (a provisional
explanation).
• Test the hypothesis through data collection
and analysis.
• If the hypothesis is verified, it may support
a theory.

Scientific Method Example

Caterpillar: Confidential Green

Scientific Method Example
• State the research problem
• How does tissue mummify? Are
certain environments better at causing
mummification?

Caterpillar: Confidential Green

Scientific Method Example
• Develop a hypothesis.
• I think a wet environment is best for
mummification.

Caterpillar: Confidential Green

Scientific Method Example
• Test the hypothesis through data collection
and analysis.

Caterpillar: Confidential Green

NO!!

Caterpillar: Confidential Green

Scientific Method Example
• Develop a hypothesis.
• I think a cold environment is best for
mummification.

Caterpillar: Confidential Green

Scientific Method Example
• Test the hypothesis through data collection
and analysis.

Caterpillar: Confidential Green

NO!!

Caterpillar: Confidential Green

Scientific Method Example
• Develop a hypothesis.
• I think a dry environment is best for
mummification.

Caterpillar: Confidential Green

Scientific Method Example
• Test the hypothesis through data collection
and analysis.

Caterpillar: Confidential Green

Scientific Method Example
• Verify the hypothesis

Caterpillar: Confidential Green

Scientific Method Example
• Develop a theory
• Dry environments are the best for
mummification!

Anthropological Perspective

Caterpillar: Confidential Green

Anthropological Perspective
• A broad perspective that helps us
understand the diversity of the human
experience within the context of biological
and behavioral continuity with other
species.

Caterpillar: Confidential Green

Why the Anthropological Perspective
Matters
• Anthropology offers a wider appreciation
of the human experience, in order to
understand human beings and how our
species came to be.

Caterpillar: Confidential Green

Physical Anthropology
Subfields

Caterpillar: Confidential Green

Genetics
• The study of gene structure and inheritance.

Caterpillar: Confidential Green

Human Variation
• The study of adaptation to environmental
conditions.

Caterpillar: Confidential Green

Paleoanthropology
• The study of human evolution.

Caterpillar: Confidential Green

Primatology
• The study of non-human primates.

Caterpillar: Confidential Green

Anthropometry
• The study of measurements of human
body parts.

Caterpillar: Confidential Green

Osteology
• The study of the human skeleton.

Caterpillar: Confidential Green

Paleopathology
• The study of disease and injury in skeletal
remains.

Caterpillar: Confidential Green

Forensic Anthropology
• The identification of skeletal remains with
regard to the law.
